Study Finds Rise In Kids Taking Weight-Loss Drugs

Miami, FL (AHN) – The number of children in the UK taking obesity drugs meant for adults has skyrocketed, according to a recent study.

The researchers also found that the number of young people prescribed the medications has increased dramatically since 1999, but most of these people stop taking the drugs before they could expect to see results.

The study states that more than 75 percent of these patients received prescriptions for the drug orlistat, marketed as Xenical or Alli. The drug is approved for people as young as 12 in the United States, but only for adults in Britain.

The researchers said that the drug’s side effects prompt many young people to stop taking it within an average of three months. They said in a statement that the drug should only be prescribed in combination with proper support and a comprehensive weight-loss program.

The study was published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.
