Selena Gomez Turning Her Back On Pop Music? Working On ‘Singer/Songwriter Type Stuff’ During Break

Could Selena Gomez be turning her back on pop music as she takes some time away from the spotlight?

According to reports, while Selena has been taking a much deserved break away from the public eye over the past few weeks, she’s allegedly been working on new music that’s potentially pretty different to the pop heavy sound fans are used to.

An insider recently alleged that rather than sticking to the sultry pop sound we heard on Gomez’s most recent release, Revival, Selena is now reportedly turning her attention to “singer/songwriter type stuff” as she recuperates and battles lupus.

“Selena is an artist by nature and the only way she knows how to handle her depression is by channeling it into something creative,” a source revealed to Hollywood Life of how Selena has been spending her downtime working on new music, noting that putting her feelings into words has almost been like therapy for Gomez.

“One of [Selena’s] doctors suggested that she keep a journal,” the insider continued to the site of Gomez’s recovery and potential upcoming new music, “and she’s finding a lot of what she’s written will make for great songs.”

The source then confirmed that Selena’s new music may take a detour from her past pop hits like “Good For You” and “Same Old Love” and could show the world a different side of Gomez.

“It will be more singer/songwriter type stuff, as opposed to the pop stuff she’s known for,” the insider said of the star’s upcoming new music.

Selena is yet to speak out regarding reports claiming she’s been working on singer/songwriter music during her time away from the spotlight, though Gomez did tease fans with new music just days before announcing her break earlier this year.

While it’s not clear if Selena Gomez has now entirely scrapped her upcoming new album, Seventeen reported back in August that Gomez told fans during a concert in Singapore earlier this year that she was “definitely” planning on releasing a new album in the not too distant future, despite Revival only dropping a year ago.

“Lately I’ve been writing and recording some new music,” Selena told fans during her “Revival World Tour,” which was cut short by several months after Gomez announced that she would be taking a break from the spotlight. “I’m getting ready to release another album. I can definitely say that now.”

Just days later, Gomez then took to Snapchat to tease one of her new songs, rumored to be titled “Unstable.”

Selena is yet to reveal if she’s still planning on releasing new music soon, though Gomez’s new music tease came just weeks before she announced via a statement issued to People that she would be canceling the remaining dates on her “Revival World Tour” and taking a break from music in order to focus on her health and the side effects of lupus.

“I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges,” Selena said of her break in a statement in late August, shortly after teasing new music. “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.”

Gomez has notably stayed away from social media since announcing her break and has rarely been spotted in public, though it appears that Selena is now doing well in her recovery after E! News reported that the singer and actress happily posed for photos with fans at a restaurant in Tennessee just last week.

According to an onlooker who spoke about Selena’s rare public sighting, Gomez “enjoyed herself and was there for a late lunch,” and, despite shying away from the spotlight for two months after announcing her break, appeared more than happy to take photos with fellow restaurant goers.

“[Selena] couldn’t have been more gracious to everyone and to the fans and was more than happy to take pictures with whoever,” the onlooker said of Gomez.
