‘Fear The Walking Dead’: Did Robert Kirkman Just Reveal Nick Is A Whisperer?

Ever since AMC announced there would be a companion series for The Walking Dead, fans have been speculating about how the shows could merge. At the recent New York Comic-Con, a discussion about the Whisperers now has fans wondering if Nick could be a Whisperer.

Spoiler alert: This article discusses AMC’s The Walking Dead, its comics, and the companion TV show, Fear the Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

When Fear the Walking Dead was announced by AMC, fans began to imagine just how the characters from this show could meet up with those from The Walking Dead. Many times Fear‘s showrunners have said it would be geographically impossible to link the two zombie apocalypse shows, but fans still speculated. When it was revealed in Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead that Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) was a Southerner, fans agreed this would be a great way to bridge the two shows without being unrealistic in how far people could travel across the U.S. during the zombie apocalypse.

However, at the recent comic book panel at New York Comic-Con, when The Walking Dead creator, Robert Kirkman, was asked about the Whisperers, suddenly a new way in which Fear and The Walking Dead could be linked was formed.

In the comic book version of The Walking Dead, the Whisperers are a group of apocalypse survivors first introduced in Issue #130. This group disguise themselves by wearing the preserved skins of the walkers and whisper in order to avoid detection when they are among the undead. Robert Kirkman came up with the idea for the Whisperers when he was trying to imagine how people would survive in this sort of situation.

“I always wanted to show how different people have survived,” Kirkman revealed during the panel. “These people are so beaten down by the zombie apocalypse they they have tried to abandon all humanity.”

As Polygon points out, talk of the Whisperers, invariably, led to discussion about a character in Fear the Walking Dead who hides among the undead as well.

Nick Clark (Frank Dillane) is a character in Fear the Walking Dead who learned very early on in the zombie apocalypse that if you smear on the blood of the infected and walk slowly among the undead, they will not realize a human walks alongside them. Since he discovered this, Nick has often used this disguise to get around from place to place.

In Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead, Nick discovered a group of people who also used infected blood to disguise themselves. This group, known as Colonia, lived peacefully until they came onto the radar of another group who decided to invade. Nick alerted Colonia, and they ended up abandoning their home and traveling to the border. During this trip, they covered themselves in infected blood and walked, en masse, among the undead.

The similarities between the Whisperers and Nick’s group were not lost on one Walking Dead fan.

“Is Nick going to be a Whisperer?” the fan asked Kirkman.

If this were the case, it would mean the group of Colonia would have traveled from Tijuana all the way across America to where Rick’s group and Hilltop reside. In the comics, the Whisperers are said to have originated in Washington, D.C. However, just because it is this way in the comics doesn’t necessarily mean this is how it will go down in the TV version of The Walking Dead.

So, what was Kirkman’s answer?
