Duggar Family News: Did Jim Bob And Michelle Take A Dig At LGBT Kids?

Members of the Duggar family stopped being as outspoken about their anti-LGBT views after Josh Duggar’s sexual molestation scandal became front-page news. However, Jim Bob and Michelle recently buried a dig at LGBT kids in a blog post on the Duggar family’s website.

On October 4, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar shared a list of the 16 things that they pray over for their 19 children. According to the Duggar family patriarch and matriarch, they don’t pray for their kids’ happiness, safety, and health. Instead, their list focuses heavily on sin and obedience. They pray for their kids to be “morally pure,” to have “the heart of a servant,” to “be kept from the love of money,” and to “trust God with their parents and not allow rebellion to set in.”

The final item on the list seems to suggest that the Duggar parents pray that none of their children were born lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. According to Jim Bob and Michelle, they ask God to ensure “that our boys would be glad to be boys and our girls glad to be girls.”

It’s certainly no secret that the Duggar family is transphobic. In 2014, Michelle Duggar drew the ire of the LGBT community when she compared transgender women to child predators in a robocall. The purpose of the recording was to convince Fayetteville, Arkansas residents to protest an anti-discrimination ordinance aimed at protecting LGBT citizens.

The Duggar family was later accused of being hypocritical when In Touch Weekly discovered that one of the family’s own, Josh Duggar, had sexually preyed upon multiple children. According to a police report, he was 15 years old when he molested his five-year-old sister. His victims also included three other sisters and a babysitter.

The Duggar family could have used their experiences to warn other parents about the possibility of child molestation happening in their households, but they chose to remain silent until they were forced to confront their dark past. In the meantime, they used the fame they gained from being reality TV stars to become powerful anti-LGBT activists who often campaigned with politicians who shared their views. As Buzzfeed reports, Josh Duggar even scored a gig working as the executive director of the legislative action arm of the Family Research Council, a nonprofit known for its fight against LGBT rights. However, Josh was forced to resign after the public learned that he had sexually molested his younger sisters.

During an interview with Megyn Kelly about how they handled the molestation that went on in their home, Jim Bob and Michelle did not apologize for comparing transgender women to child predators. Instead, Jim Bob explained why he thought it was unfair for Michelle to be labeled a hypocrite. He argued that his wife used the word “pedophile” in her robocall, and his son was no such thing — according to the Duggar family patriarch, Josh was just “a child preying on a child.” However, as the Huffington Post reports, Michelle actually used the words “child predator” in her robocall, not the word “pedophile.”

The Duggar family’s prayer asking for boys to be glad to be boys and girls to be glad to be girls may not just be about Jim Bob and Michelle’s hopes that none of their children are transgender. In the Duggars’ world, being happy to be a boy means only being attracted to girls, and vice versa. In other words, they’re also praying that none of their kids are gay.

The meaning behind this simple prayer could even extend beyond gender identity and sexual orientation. As Talking Points Memo reports, the Duggars raise their kids to believe that girls and boys are divinely designed to fulfill specific roles. Boys grow up to be providers, and girls grow up to be their husbands’ “helpmeets.” The Duggar family believes that women should be submissive to their husbands, and girls remain under the authority of their fathers until they get married. This is why 26-year-old Jana and 22-year-old Jinger still live at home with their parents.

The Duggar family may no longer be openly campaigning for anti-LGBT political candidates or publicly speaking out against LGBT rights, but their decision to share a prayer about gender and sexual orientation could signal that they’re interested in doing so again. Perhaps Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are getting bolder about sharing their controversial views now that TLC is giving them so much screentime on Counting On.
