Drew Brees Breaks Johnny Unitas’ Touchdown Record

Drew Brees broke another NFL record last night. The New Orleans Saints quarterback threw a touchdown pass (actually, he threw four) for the 48th consecutive game.

Brees broke Johnny Unitas’ streak of 47 games last night, a record which has stood for more than half a century.

Brees said:

“Certainly the man who held this record stands for everything great in this league… The guy that held this record for 52 years, Johnny Unitas, arguably one of the best quarterbacks in this game, really revolutionized the position, everything that he stood for as a player, just a pioneer of this game. It’s a tremendous honor. It’s humbling.”

The New Orleans Saints have had a rough start to the 2012 season. The team is playing without their head coach Sean Payton and started the season with four straight losses. Brees, however, said that he still has confidence in his teammates.

Brees said:

“While you never want to start 0-4, if you do, you’ve got the right guys in the locker room to turn that thing around and certainly not turn on each other. That’s never something that we would do. We understand we have a little bit of a mountain to climb here: One step at a time, one rock at a time. We’ve got the right people in the locker room and that makes you feel you always have a chance.”

The Saints have been playing this season without their head coach Sean Peyton. Peyton, along with a few other members of the Saints organization, was suspended for his involvement in the Bounty Gate scandal. Peyton was allowed, however, to watch the game at the stadium last night along with general manager Mickey Loomis and Unitas’ son Joe.

Brees said:

“It gave us a good mojo for sure … I love my coach, so glad he could be here. Mickey and Joe Vitt as well. It is special for our team, special they could be a part of this record.”
