Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III made a premature exit from his team’s game on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons when he was injured during a scramble in the third quarter.

On the play, RG3, the number two overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, suffered a mild concussion when he took a shot to the helmet while attempting to score during a third-and-goal from the 3-yard-line.

Following the hit, which came around 10 minutes into the second half, Griffin left the field and did not return. CBS Sports notes he also was treated for a cut on his chin. Said Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan:

“He wasn’t sure what quarter it was in the third quarter. So at that time, when he wasn’t really sure what the score was, what the quarter was, we knew he had a mild concussion — at least according to the doctors.”

In RGIII’s absence, Kirk Cousins, a fourth-round pick from Michigan State making his NFL debut, took over as QB but was unable to lead Washington to a victory as the Falcons won 24-17, handing the Redskins their eighth consecutive home loss.

Shortly after the game, Griffin took to Twitter to update his fans on his injury status:

“I’m ok and I think after all the testing I will play next week.”

ESPN notes RG3 will have to go through the NFL’s return-to-play protocol before he is cleared to practice. He is also not allowed to speak to reporters until he is symptom-free.

On the season, RG3 has gone for over 1,000 yards and four touchdowns and has a passer rating of 103.2 to go along with more than 230 yards rushing and four rushing TDs.
