Cult classic The Princess Bride originally hit the theaters in late September 1987 and didn’t set any box office records. Once it reached home video and television, however, the popularity of the romantic adventure comedy soared. Over the intervening years, many wondered whether a sequel is “inconceivable”?

A celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Princess Bride took place on October 2 in New York City as Entertainment Weekly reports:

“Director Rob Reiner, screenwriter William Goldman, cast members Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Carol Kane, and Wallace Shawn, and a thousand-odd lucky Princess Bride superfans gathered in Manhattan’s Alice Tully Hall for a special showing of the 1987 classic (now out on blu-ray).”

A panel discussion followed the screening.

Willam Goldman, 81, who wrote the screenplay for the 1987 film based on his own 1973 novel, had this to say about a possible Princess Bride sequel according to EW:

“William Goldman called his attempts at writing a second Princess Bride book ‘total failure.’ Though he’d love to complete it — ‘more than anything else I’ve ever not written’— the story just hasn’t come to him: ‘It’s just one of those things when you go to your pit, and everything sucks there.’ “

The Tribune Newspapers further describes how Goldman thus far has been stumped about writing a sequel:

“I’m desperate to make it and write it and I don’t know how,” said an emotional Goldman, who also penned the scripts for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men.”
