Weight Gain Influences Prostate Cancer Risk

Miami, FL (AHN) – Gaining weight between younger and older adulthood could influence a man’s chances of developing prostate cancer, according to University of Hawaii researchers.
The researchers said in a statement that obesity is a common risk factor in colon and breast cancers in post-menopausal women, but the relationship between body size and prostate cancer in men is not completely understood.
The study examined 83,879 men of different ethnicities between the ages of 45 to 75 years old. Of the participants, 5,554 were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The results indicate that being overweight in older adulthood increased the prostate cancer risk in white and native Hawaiian men, but overweight Japanese men seemed to have a decreased risk.
Excessive weight gain between younger and older adulthood seemed to up the risk of advanced and high-grade prostate cancers in white men and increase the risk of localized and low-grade prostate cancer in black men, and decrease the risk of localized cancer in Japanese men.
The study is published in the journal, Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
