John Cena To Dean Ambrose: ‘Roman Reigns And Seth Rollins Are Bonafide Superstars, You Are Not’

Former 15-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena really laid into Dean Ambrose on Tuesday’s Talking Smack show.

Cena, who is set to face Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles in a triple threat match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the upcoming No Mercy pay-per-view, not only said that he doesn’t care about Dean Ambrose enough to either like or dislike him, he also said that, of the three former Shield members, Ambrose is the only one who isn’t a “bonafide superstar.”

“Let’s document The Shield – the first time they hit the ring, ‘man, that Ambrose is something special. Right now, two bonafide WWE superstars: Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns. One guy is still trying to figure it out; Dean Ambrose.”

While Roman Reigns is disliked by the majority of the WWE fans, there’s no question that he’s a much bigger star than Dean Ambrose right now. The same can be said for Seth Rollins when compared to Ambrose. So, Cena wasn’t that far off on Talking Smack.

Cena did acknowledge that Ambrose is good in the ring, but he also said that Cesaro is fantastic in the ring, and that he, like Ambrose, is “still trying to figure it out.”

It’s been a decade since WWE made John Cena the face of their organization, and during his time on top, he’s said that the next top man will have to come through him, which is something that he truly believes. Of course, WWE has been trying to move Roman Reigns into that spot for the better part of the last two years, but Reigns doesn’t have the same gifts that Cena does. Sure, you can make comparisons between the two, but you cannot compare them when it comes to charisma.

Even though it’s clear Reigns isn’t the best guy to replace Cena, WWE is still planning on having him be the 15-time champ’s heir apparent.

When The Shield first debuted on the main roster in 2012, everybody said that, of the three, Dean Ambrose should be pushed the hardest, but everybody also knew that Roman Reigns would get the biggest push because of his look.

When The Shield broke up in 2014, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins were pushed into WWE’s main event scene immediately, while Dean Ambrose was stuck in the middle of the card. Now, thanks to the brand split, Ambrose is finally getting his shot at the top of the card, but his run as a WWE main event superstar has been getting mixed reviews.

During his appearance on Steve Austin’s podcast over the summer, Ambrose was criticized by “The Texas Rattlesnake” for resting on his laurels. John Cena said the same thing just a couple of weeks later on an episode of SmackDown. So, Cena has been on Ambrose’s case for the last couple of months.

It’ll be interesting to see if Ambrose gives us a little something extra at the No Mercy pay-per-view on October 9 due to Cena’s recent comments. In addition to saying that he doesn’t care about Ambrose, Cena also said that, at No Mercy, the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion needs to either step up or step aside. So, we’ll see if Ambrose steps up next month.

It does look like Ambrose will continue to be one of SmackDown’s top performers even if he doesn’t meet John Cena’s expectations at next month’s show. Right now, WWE’s blue brand has an extremely thin roster, so they pretty much need Ambrose to be one of their top guys. Will he continue to be one of their top babyfaces? Well, there’s a chance that he won’t be. He’s been acting a bit heelish over the last couple of weeks, so that could be a hint that he’s turning sometime soon.
