Writer and director David Chase has made the jump from television to the big screen with the coming-of-age film Not Fade Away.

Chase has been working in television for over 30 years, boasting producing and writing credits for the shows The Rockford Files, Northern Exposure, and I’ll Fly Away. He is best known for his second original series, HBO’s highly-acclaimed The Sopranos. Having won seven Emmy Awards, Chase has turned his attentions to film for the now (though he is developing a mini-series for HBO).

Chase’s feature film debut, Not Fade Away, will focus on the lead singer in a teenage rock band called “The Twylight Zones” in the 1960s. It is described as “a music-driven coming-of-age story,” and will put Chase in the director’s chair over James Gandolfini once again (Gandolfini will play the boy’s father). John Magaro leads a cast that also includes Bella Heathcote, Christopher McDonald, Molly Price, Lisa Lampanelli, Jack Huston and Brad Garrett.

Chase described it more in depth as: “a postwar, post-Depression era parent who has given his kid every advantage that he didn’t have growing up, but now can’t help feeling jealous of the liberated, more adventurous destiny his son is able to enjoy.”

The film will premiere at the New York Film Festival and Austin Film Festivals this fall before seeing a limited release on December 21st.
