Folks at the NYPD have delivered a bill to the doorstep of a grieving mother, charging her for the repairs needed to fix the police cruiser dented when it hit – and killed – her son.

The police car was dented when it fatally struck 27-year-old Tamon Robinson, whom the cops were chasing at the time. According to NY Daily, Robinson was being chased for stealing decorative stones from his housing project, and was tragically run down by the police car by mistake. The young barista fell into a coma and died six days later.

His mother, Laverne Dobbinson, says that the NYPD only allowed her to stay by her son’s bedside for 20 minutes before he died, reports Newser.

Then came the $710 bill to cover the cost of the police car’s repair. Dobbinson was stunned.

“We’re still grieving, and this is like a slap in the face,” Dobbinson said. “They want my son to pay for damage to the vehicle that killed him. It’s crazy.”

“Isn’t there respect for the dead?” asked 50-year-old John Torrence, the victim’s uncle.

Dobbinson’s lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, is planning on suing the city over the cold-hearted bill, and has warned the NYPD not to do any repairs on the vehicle, so as to preserve the evidence pending a criminal investigation. He called the $710 bill a “disgrace,” adding, “In my 40 years of practicing law in this city I have never seen anything as heartless as this.”

Dobbinson suggested that the NYPD retire the vehicle, “Just like those officers shouldn’t be on the street, either,” she said.
