Vikings and Favre may be a good fit

The Minnesota Vikings may have found their man. This is clearly a team that could go far in the 2009 NFL playoffs, but they needed a strong veteran QB. So far that role seems to be filled by Brett Favre. However it is still very early in the pre-season and Brett has a history of falling apart in the second half of NFL seasons past.

With that being said, and looking at a weak first half of the schedule for the Vikings it seems pretty likely that the Vikings are a 10+ win team for 2009. Last night Favre was a very efficient 13-18 for 142 yards and a touchdown. Since the Vikings have so many offensive weapons Favre will not have to always be the hero, and at times can let running back Adrian Peterson shoulder much of the load.

Vikings fans should be encouraged by the play of Favre, Peterson, and the way the team is using first round draft pick Wide Receiver Percy Harvin. Harvin took a few snaps last night in the Vikings wild cat formation and was smart enough to hand the ball off to Peterson. Harvin was also involved in a reverse play, and clearly he is a versatile player.

However big questions remain for this team. Can Favre handle a full on NFL pass rush. At times in last night’s game it seemed that he is not yet up to it. The final question will be if Favre can last for the entire 16 games of 2009.
