‘The 6th Friend’ Trailer Arrives, And It’s Beyond Creepy [Video]

The 6th Friend is the latest in a long line of slasher mysteries that pits a group of friends against a masked killer.

While it’s certainly nothing new about the concept, the execution is where films like this fail or succeed, and judging from this first trailer, audiences can start ratcheting up those expectations.

Fangoria received a first look at the trailer, which you can check out here or simply click play on the embed below.

According to the official synopsis for The 6th Friend, things start innocently enough with a group of girl friends who are graduating from college and decide to throw their own graduation party.

The group’s resident “stoner” special orders some psychedelic drugs for everyone to partake. Fangoria sums up the rest.

“Drugged and disoriented, the girls’ special night quickly becomes a dark, foggy nightmare of blood and violence. Five years later, the girls gather together once again in hopes of rekindling that close friendship that they once had, only to find themselves being hunted by who, or what, they do not know.”

What you’ll notice immediately about the trailer is that the emphasis is more on suspense and mystery than blood and gore.

While it’s pretty much a given that slashers have to have an equitable share of blood and gore, The 6th Friend seems more The Usual Suspects and less Final Destination 5.

The 6th Friend stars a cast of up-and-comers that includes Jamie Bernadette (also a co-writer, known for I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu), Chantelle Albers (Axeman), Dominique Swain (Lolita), Jessica Morris, (The Wrong Roommate), Tania Nolan (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), and Monique Rosario (Drifter).

What is somewhat encouraging about The 6th Friend from a feminist viewpoint is that the entire thing seems more geared toward fully drawn female characters. It is directed by Letia Clouston, who has a handful of direction credits to her name at IMDb.

But the trailer is well-crafted and bears the marks of a film not out-of-place in theaters — more than can be said for most horror fare released to VOD each month.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to go on at this point regarding when you can see The 6th Friend at your local cineplex or streaming through Amazon/Netflix/etc. The official Facebook page is even absent a release date, which means Sommer Leigh Studios — the house behind the production — is likely seeking a distributor.

Here’s hoping it doesn’t sit on the shelf too long.

While The 6th Friend is a rarity in the horror genre — a film driven almost entirely by the integrity of its (mostly) all-female cast — it isn’t alone.

Some other favorites of the genre would include Neil Marshall’s The Descent.

In The Descent, a group of female adventurers — one of whom is nursing a tragic past — run afoul of strange creatures in a caving expedition. Buckets of blood and a haunting, heartfelt finale — at least in its original form — make it well worth a look.

Another mostly all-female horror film worth checking out is Inside, which will soon be getting the American remake treatment for better or worse.

With these and The 6th Friend, it’s clear that women rule when it comes to the horror genre. But what do you think, readers?
