‘WWE Clash Of Champions’ Results: Roman Reigns Wins U.S. Title From Rusev

WWE sometimes likes to surprise their fans by doing title changes that are not expected. At the Clash of the Champions pay-per-view, Roman Reigns defeated Rusev to capture the United States Championship, as reported by Wrestling Inc. Since Reigns is viewed as a main event-level performer, it comes as a surprise to many fans that World Wrestling Entertainment would put the belt on him.

When Roman Reigns was paired with Rusev in a feud, the belief was that WWE was simply giving him something to do while other performers were working main event programs for the heavyweight championship. Often times, top level guys need to take a break from the belt to make them fresh again.

Despite his recent improvements, Rusev has yet to move into the main event scene for WWE. Many believed that the United States Championship was the perfect belt for him to carry at the time.

Just like in most venues in the country, fans at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, gave mixed reactions when Roman Reigns made his appearance. There are still many WWE fans that are against the former-Shield member, so they shower him with boos, even though he is a baby face.

Since they owned the rights to the Clash of Champions name, which was created by WCW, members of the WWE management team opted to use it as a replacement for the Night of Champions PPV that they created. The concept of the pay-per-view was that all of the championships would be defended.

Interestingly enough, only one championship changed hands at Clash of Champions, and it was the belt that the least amount of people predicted would change hands. More people would have guessed that the tag team championship or the divas championship would have been won by new champions.

With Roman Reigns winning the United States Championship from Rusev, it now appears that he is going to be kept away from the WWE Heavyweight Championship for a little while longer. Kevin Owens will more than likely be kept away from Reigns.

While there is a very good chance that Roman Reigns will end up working a rematch program with Rusev over the United States Championship, WWE is going to need to find someone to eventually challenge Reigns for the belt. It is highly unlikely that Rusev will get the title back right away.

For several weeks now, WWE has been giving Braun Strowman the slow build up, where he has been beating random wrestlers on episodes of Monday Night Raw. Eventually, management is going to put Strowman up against some of the top level performers. A feud with Roman Reigns is a possibility.

Another performer that Roman Reigns can work a United States Championship program against would be Chris Jericho. WWE feels that Jericho is the type of veteran that knows how to work the audience well enough to the point where some will start cheering for Reigns.

WWE is highly unlikely going to keep the United States Championship on Roman Reigns for too long, so do not expect to see a lot of title programs for him over the upcoming months. Management knows that they need to get Reigns back into the main event before the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania comes back around.

With five championships being defended at Clash of Champions, one of the belts needed to change hands. Roman Reigns might have been the fortunate one because management did not have plans on any of the other WWE titles changing hands on Sunday night.
