‘Captain America: Civil War’ Designer Talks Spider-Man Suit, Challenges, & More

Major hype was gathered when details about Captain America: Civil War were released.

Released in May, fans flocked to the big screen to see their favorite characters return to action. Captain America and Iron Man fought for control, we got to see Black Panther on screen, and Spider-Man returned to a costume that fans had been anticipating since his appearance in a trailer.

Perhaps much of the excitement for Captain America: Civil War revolved around Spider-Man’s costume. In a report by IGN, it’s revealed that Spidey’s costume choice was a decision made in part by costume designer Judianna Makovsky. For fans who follow the comic, it was easy to recognize Peter Parker’s Spider-Man outfit from the Civil War comics.

Makovsky weighed in on both Spider-Man and Black Panther’s outfits, discussing both the fun and challenging aspects of bringing the idea to life.

“Both of them are fun to do but they are a challenge,” Makovsky stated. “Spider-Man in particular because there have been Spideys before. And I think in our initial meetings, everyone agreed it would be great to get back to the original Spidey, and really have that image that we all had when we first read the comic. Again, keeping it simpler, taking it back to its roots and the original color.”

The only costume that we’ve seen besides the Civil War attire is the “Black Suit,” a result of the alien symbiote binding itself to Parker’s costume in Spider-Man 3. Judging by the reception, it was an exceedingly great idea to transition the new Spider-Man duds into that which fans would recognize. This comes alongside the fact that Spider-Man was played by actor Tom Holland, new to taking on the role of Peter Parker.

While Spider-Man’s choice of costume in Captain America: Civil War was a consistent topic of discussion, Makovsky reveals that Black Panther’s costume was another challenge entirely.

“Panther was very difficult because, you know, you needed sort of a feline body, but it’s hard and practical at the same time,” Makovsky began. “You needed a feeling of some sort of ethnicity in there, but of a world we weren’t really creating yet, so you didn’t want to go too far and say too much about that world. Even when he’s not Black Panther and he’s T’Challa. You know, we had looked at a lot of royalty in Africa and really, they’re educated in the West. They get dressed in Saville Row. And we decided not to go into African robes or whatever, and to keep him a little more — he’s out at the U.N., so he’s dressed appropriately. So I think that was a bit of a challenge, to create who he is as a royal. Not only as Black Panther.”

T’Challa is played by Chadwick Boseman, who brought the character to the big screen for the first time in Captain America: Civil War. It’s more than likely that we’ll see him once again, especially if fans stayed for the credits and the special scene that played afterward. Could we see similar outfits in the future? If Makovsky has anything to do with it, it’s almost a guarantee. It’s reported by iO9 that Black Panther’s outfit has some CG work involved. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, as T’Challa’s attire is woven with an almost otherworldly appearance.

Captain America: Civil War is now available on Blu-Ray. If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for action as the Avengers jump into conflict.
