Dave’s Massive Red Cabbage Takes The Internet By Storm As Controversy Rocks National Giant Vegetable Championships

David Thomas’ massive cabbage has become an Internet sensation after becoming the world record breaking cabbage at the National Giant Vegetable Championships during the Malvern Autumn Show in Worcestershire.

During the National Giant Vegetable Championships, three other vegetables also claimed a “world’s biggest” award. However, David Thomas’ red cabbage took center stage as it beat a 90-year-old cabbage record.

According to Metro, Dave Thomas’ red cabbage weighed in at 51.1 pounds and nearly conceals his entire body when he sits behind it for photo opportunities. Due to the massive size of the red cabbage, the gigantic vegetable has made its rounds on the Internet, making its way through the BBC and other major news sites.

Some would think that a giant cabbage is hardly newsworthy, and may be more apt to become bait for Photoshop aficionados. However, growing a vegetable of such grandeur has the possibility to lead to great things, such as a new species that consistently grows large, thus presenting the world with the opportunity to grow more food in lesser spaces.

When asked about his massive red cabbage, Dave Thomas revealed that there really is not a secret to the process, it just takes some tender loving care.

“There’s no big secret to growing giant veg. You just need the right seeds to start with, plenty of room, good soil and a bit of luck.”

The 51.1 pound cabbage was approximately the size of a beach ball. The previous world record red cabbage was grown in 1925 by Mr. R. Straw and weighed only 42 pounds, according to the BBC.

In addition to the massive red cabbage, David Thomas also holds world records for having the heaviest parsnip and the heaviest cucumber. In this year’s festival, he entered a total of 16 vegetables.

In an upset, Dale Toten also hoped to battle for the world’s biggest cabbage. However, due to a strange controversial turn of events, he had to settle for third place after a chef accidentally used a portion of it to make confit for some hotel guests.

Toten claims that he is not upset that David Thomas won, but was upset that his cabbage was used against his permission.

“I looked in the chef’s pantry and it was right there in front of me – he had used it for a confit,” he said. I might have lost my temper at that point. He did get an earful off me.”

Toten went on to share that he has warned everyone never to touch his vegetables again.

“It was an agency worker who did it as the others all know not to touch my vegetables but I have had a word.”

Despite Toten’s upset, he does not believe that Dave Thomas had anything to do with the issue and is happy that Thomas won.

The operations director for the Ston Easton park spoke up on the matter and advised that precautionary measures are being put in place to ensure issues such as this do not happen again.

“Cabbage-gate has been a very serious incident here at Ston Easton Park and we are now in the process of implementing special measures to ensure that this never happens again and that Dale’s prize vegetables are kept safe and sound.”

Although David Thomas appreciates all of the praise for his giant cabbage, he is not letting it go to his head. Instead, Thomas is looking forward to starting on next year’s vegetable garden.

“I couldn’t be happier, it makes all the work even more worthwhile when you’re awarded a world record. I can’t wait to get cracking on next year’s crop and see what that might bring.”
