Charlotte Police Finally Release Video Of Keith Scott Shooting [Breaking]

After days of requests and protests by Charlotte, North Carolina, residents and others, including presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department finally agreed to release the dashboard camera video of the altercation between officers and Keith Lamont Scott. Although this may seem to be a win for the hundreds hoping for greater explanations behind the killing, as you can see below, only part of the video has been made available for public viewing.

Based on a report by the New York Times, the department’s chief, Kerr Putney, stated at a news conference that he felt the portion of the video released would provide facts to substantiate the shooting.

“What we are releasing are the objective facts. I stand behind the truth. People can interpret anything they want based on one piece of evidence, and I can tell you, I suspect they will based on the video footage. But what I say is, you have to put all pieces together.”

Warning, the following videos may not be suitable for sensitive viewers:

This video comes days after Rukeyia Scott released her own video — filmed with her cell phone. CNN provided the full account of the captured incident where Mrs. Scott revealed Keith had a “TBI” (traumatic brain injury).

Protesters at the news conference were angered to find the entire video would not be released from the police department and that Scott’s possession of marijuana was just cause for the standoff. Chief Putney attempted to explain the threat and why officers proceeded with their decision to apprehend Scott, and ultimately shoot.

“When they see the weapon and they see the marijuana they say, ‘Uh-oh, this is a safety issue for us and the public. We need to try to address this before we serve a warrant. When you’re in possession of marijuana, and then you have a gun, that’s a public safety issue that our officers were going to address.”

On Friday, according to the New York Times, the Scott family’s attorneys, Justin Bamberg and Eduardo Curry, viewed the full videos from both the dashboard and body camera. Attorney Bamberg stated the dashboard video show officers behind a truck, shouting demands at Scott while he was inside his vehicle with the driver’s window rolled up. The video then shows Scott getting out with his hands down — his right hand empty and “some type of object” in his left. The attorney noted, Scott who is right-handed, seems “confused.”

“It’s impossible to make out what it is. He doesn’t make any dramatic movements.”

Bramberg went on to say that Scott stepped forward “in a nonaggressive manner,” and then took a step back before gunshots were fired.

CNN reported that all of this comes just a short time before North Carolina planned to restrict the release of police captured videos, which was previously scheduled to take effect on October 1.

North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory suggested the law was necessary for “uniformity, clarity and transparency” and according to CNN, “would establish clear standards and procedures for releasing law enforcement recordings.”

“Technology like dashboard cameras and body cameras can be very helpful, but when used by itself technology can also mislead and misinform, which causes other issues and problems within our community.”

What are your thoughts on the state’s decision to restrict videos regarding police shootings and the events leading to the death of Keith Lamont Scott? Was the shooting justified or another example of police abuse of power?
