Five Teams WWE Should Bring Back To Help Their Weak Tag Team Division

The WWE brand split has severely weakened a tag team division that wasn’t all that strong to begin with. On Raw, there are really only two top teams — The New Day and The Club — and you could say the same about SmackDown’s division, as American Alpha and The Usos are the only top teams on the show. Of course, the blue brand does have Heath Slater and Rhyno, but their run as a team may not be a long term thing.

When SmackDown began their tag team tournament back on August 23, they brought back The Headbangers, who hadn’t been seen on WWE television for well over a decade. They ended up losing to Slater and Rhyno, and they didn’t look all that good in the process. But their return to the company got people thinking about other teams that WWE could bring back to help add depth to both brand’s tag divisions, and most teams that they could bring back would make way more of an impact than The Headbangers did.

The New Age Outlaws got a brief run with the Tag Team Titles back in 2014, and they proved that they could still be one of the company’s top teams, even though they’re both well over 40-years-old.

One half of the team — Billy Gunn — was fired from WWE last year after the company learned that had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in a bodybuilding competition. At the time of his firing, Gunn was a coach at the performance center, and not an active performer, so his firing was met with some criticism.

It’s quite clear that WWE hasn’t blacklisted Gunn from the company like they have with others who’ve been fired, as he’s going to be a character in this year’s WWE 2K17 video game. So, it’s only a matter of time before he’s brought back to the company as a coach, and who knows? Maybe we’ll see the New Age Outlaws return to either Raw or SmackDown.

  • Booker T And Goldust

WWE has clearly been trying to recreate the magic between Booker T and Goldust by pairing “The Bizarre One” with R-Truth, but they haven’t been able to do so.

During his appearance on Chris Jericho’s podcast, Talk is Jericho, Booker T insisted that he’s never going to have another match, saying that he’s extremely content with running his wrestling school in Texas. But, he’s still with WWE, as he’s a regular part of their expert panel on the WWE Network, and Goldust is still a member of the active roster, so, while it’s a long shot, it’s possible that WWE could have Booker T and Goldust reunite for one last run.

Both Booker T and Goldust are still in fantastic shape, so they would be one of WWE’s best teams upon their return, and their chemistry together would help breathe some life into WWE’s dull tag team division.

  • Kane And Rob Van Dam

Like Goldust and Booker T, these are two superstars that no one would’ve ever expected to be on the same page, and while their run as a team was short, it was certainly entertaining.

Kane and Rob Van Dam held the Raw Tag Team Championships for two-and-a-half months back in 2003, and they began a feud almost immediately after they dropped the titles.

“The Big Red Monster” has been lacking direction for the majority of this year. WWE has been using him on SmackDown like they’ve been using Braun Strowman on Raw, but what good is it going to do them to have Kane go on an undefeated streak by squashing a bunch of jobbers? Teaming up with Van Dam again would at least get people interested in him again, and, who knows? Maybe they could have another run as Tag Team Champs.

Shelton Benjamin was supposed to return to WWE over the summer, but a shoulder injury prevented that from happening. He’s still going to return to the company after he’s fully recovered from his injury, but he shouldn’t be coming back to WWE alone.

Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin were one of the best tag teams of their era, and they were broken up way too soon. The breakup did do one of them some good, as Benjamin went on to become a pretty successful singles star. But Haas struggled without Benjamin, and WWE tried to save him by pairing him with Rico of all people, but that didn’t work.

At the age of 44, Haas isn’t interested in wrestling on a full time basis, so a WWE return probably isn’t in the cards for him. But, you never know, maybe WWE will offer him a part time deal to return and team with Benjamin on SmackDown, which is where they got their start as a team back in 2003.

  • Hardy Boyz

It’s only a matter of time before the Hardy Boyz make their return to WWE. Both of them have found a ton of success in TNA/Impact Wrestling, but, rumor has it that Triple H is interested in bringing both of them back when their TNA contracts expire next year.

Both Matt and Jeff have said in the past that they’re not interested in working a full time WWE schedule, and they’re both big enough stars that WWE probably wouldn’t have a problem with signing them to a part time deal.

It would be a pretty big blow to TNA if both Matt and Jeff ended up leaving in 2017. But, then again, maybe it wouldn’t be, because unless TNA finds a buyer soon, they’ll be going out of business. So we could see the Hardy Boyz return to WWE before next year.
