‘Frozen 2’ Updates: Idina Menzel Excited But Skeptical That Disney Would Give Elsa A Girlfriend

One of the reasons why Disney’s Frozen was lauded in 2013 was its breakthrough character, Queen Elsa. She is strong and self-sufficient which makes her a perfect complement to her younger sister Anna. In the film, Anna has Kristoff and Elsa isn’t paired to anyone which led to many petitions asking Disney to #GiveElsaAGirlfrend in the upcoming Frozen 2. Idina Menzel, who lent her voice to the beloved character, is delighted but at the same time, she is skeptical if Disney will cave in.

The 45-year-old actress told PrideSource how she feels about the people’s requests.

“Maybe at first I was a little surprised because it’s Disney, but I can say that I’m excited that the conversation is happening. I can’t promise anybody that that’s what’s gonna happen… But deep down am I really happy that it’s causing people to talk about it and have these kinds of conversations? Yeah, I am.”

Should Elsa have a girlfriend, it won’t be the first time Menzel would play a bisexual role. When she gave life to the role of Maureen in Rent, she didn’t win the hearts of the LGBT community alone, but also had a Tony Award nomination.

The Broadway actress recalled how she’d receive letters from young audience who could relate to her characters.

“I’d get all these amazing letters from young kids struggling with their sexual orientation and who they were and how they wanted to come out. And it’s continued to be like that, really, with Wicked and Frozen, with Elsa. There are always these characters who are literally trying to come out of the closet ? they’re hiding something within them that they’re afraid to let people see, and then finally they embrace it and change the world around them.”

Meanwhile, Kristen Bell recently told Toronto Sun that Frozen 2’s writers are now working on the script’s finishing touches. The 36-year-old actress, who voices Anna, revealed that they haven’t started recording yet although the script for the sequel is nearly done.

Apart from Frozen 2, the cast members also record for projects played at various Disneyland parks. They will reprise their roles as well in a 2017 Christmas special that will revolve around the film’s famous snowman, Olaf. Bell said that they’ve finished recording new songs for the Olaf Christmas special.

The mother of two is thankful that she got the chance to work for a project that continues to make people happy.

“It feels like being a part of a little bit of magic. You just hope that the project you’re working on brings people joy, and then you look at the team around you and you realize that you can’t go wrong with a dream team, like the one they put together to work on Frozen. It’s so much fun!”

Bell previously said that it took a while before the team announced Frozen 2 because they wanted to guarantee that they would have a great output. “It took them a while because they wanted to figure out what story they needed to tell and what would be important and engaging and I think they found it,” she explained.

Earlier this year, speculations have risen that Elsa might have a love interest in the upcoming sequel. Movie Pilot reported that Elsa could be Disney’s first gay princess because the film’s main song, “Let It Go,” allegedly pertains to someone finally coming out.

Other theories include Olaf also getting a partner. As for Anna, some are theorizing that she might have powers that could be related to summer or autumn. It is likewise believed that a new villain will arrive at Arendelle.

Frozen 2 is expected to come out in 2018.
