Sooyoung Of Girls’ Generation Reportedly Lands The Female Lead Role In Upcoming K-Drama ‘Polyclinic Doctor’

Ever since So Nyeo Shi Dae (SNSD), better known as Girls’ Generation, finished up post-premier promotions for Lion Heart and their last Asia tour Girls’ Generation Phantasia, each member of the most popular girl group in K-pop history pursued their own individual endeavors. Four of the members — Yoona, Yuri, Seohyun, and Sooyoung — pursued acting especially in K-dramas. However, the one getting the most attention right now is Sooyoung.

There are multiple reasons why Sooyoung is standing out a bit more compared to the other actresses in Girls’ Generation. For starters, she graduated recently from Chung Ang University with a degree in acting alongside fellow group mate Yuri and popular actress Park Shin Hye. She then landed the main female lead in 38 Task Force, a K-drama that was extremely popular that it became the highest-rated series in Orion Cinema Network (OCN) history.

Now it seems Sooyoung’s good fortune in acting continues. It was recently reported that Sooyoung just landed the main female lead role for an upcoming K-drama titled Polyclinic Doctor.

The details of Sooyoung landing the main female lead role for Polyclinic Doctor are quite limited, but according to a broadcast insider on September 21, Choi Soo Young — better known by her K-pop idol stage name Sooyoung — was picked by a network, as reported by AllKpop. We also know that the character Sooyoung will play will have a complicated love life. What makes it complicated is unknown as the details are very vague, but that is to be expected for a K-drama that has very little information itself.

Polyclinic Doctor will be a series consisting of 16 episodes and centers around young people in different medical fields. We do know it will be produced by JS Pictures but as for which broadcasting channel will air it, we are unsure. Also, the male lead who will play opposite of Sooyoung has yet to be cast too.

“38 Task Force,” a K-drama that concluded on OCN, was one of the most-successful K-dramas for a pay channel for 2016. It is also the highest-rated K-drama in OCN history. For K-drama fans who saw Sooyoung’s acting in her last gig in 38 Task Force, it is no surprise she was picked to be the female lead of an upcoming K-drama so quickly. As mentioned earlier, 38 Task Force, which is also known as Squad 38 and 38 Revenue Collection Unit, was one of the most successful K-dramas when it comes to a series airing on a pay channel. Besides the plot and direction, every cast member was really good in their roles. Sooyoung was given extra credit because there was a clear improvement in her acting from roles she had before her education and afterwards.

As a matter of fact, Sooyoung was recognized as one of the K-pop idols who are proving that a new crop of K-pop idols crossing over into acting are actually good in it and not just there because of their popularity. Eunji of Apink, Taecyeon of 2PM, T.O.P. of Big Bang, and Uee of After School are some of the K-pop idols who are part of this group. They do have a lot to work on as they go against the prejudice most K-drama fans have of K-pop idol actors, of them not being good at acting, as enforced by Suzy of Miss A, Yoona of Girls’ Generation, Minho of Shinee, and even to an extent, IU.

Right now, Sooyoung is concentrating on other individual activities and endeavors. She, along with the rest of Girls’ Generation, may actually be pursuing such because it is believed, and feared among Sones (devoted fan club of Girls’ Generation), that they will end their journey and disband in 2017.
