‘Star Wars’s’ Carrie Fisher Reveals Why Princess Leia And Han Solo Split Up

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it was revealed that Princess Leia and Han Solo’s relationship didn’t go the distance, despite the fact that they’d confirmed their love for one another in Return Of The Jedi and even had their very own child in the shape of Ben Solo.

Those of you that watched The Force Awakens will know that Ben Solo was lulled over to the dark side, and by the J.J. Abrams blockbuster he’d long become Kylo Ren. Of course, that’s going to put a strain on any relationship.

But now Carrie Fisher, who has now played Princess Leia over the course of four films in the Star Wars universe, has revealed the exact reasons for why Princess Leia and Han Solo split up. But don’t take them too seriously, because her reasons were firmly tongue in cheek.

Speaking at the Saskatoon Comic and Entertainment Expo (via NB), Carrie Fisher, who was headlining the event, joked that Solo and Leia didn’t work out because of his job and the fact that he spent way too much time with the walking carpet that is Chewbacca.

“He smuggled way too much,” Fisher teased. “And girls, I know you don’t want your husband smuggling, do you? Hanging out with the hairy guy too often. I think there are a lot of problems with that. He wouldn’t take me on that hyperspace thing enough… [that’s a] euphemism.”

Unfortunately for viewers, we’re unlikely to learn exactly why Princess Leia and Han Solo actually split up. That’s because Han Solo unfortunately perished at the hands of his very own son in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was one of the most heartbreaking moments not just of the film but of cinema history.

It’s unlikely that Star Wars 8, which will feature a heavy dose of Princess Leia, will see the characters discussing the precise reasons why the couple’s relationship didn’t work. But at this point it’s rather clear that Ben Solo turning rather evil led to the duo’s struggles.

Any information regarding Star Wars 8, which has been written and directed by Rian Johnson, the filmmaker behind Looper and Brick, who has replaced J.J. Abrams, has been fervently devoured by fans of the franchise. And there are quite a few of those out in the world.

Adam Driver, who will reprise his role as Kylo Ren in Star Wars 8, spoke to Collider about the differences between the follow-up and The Force Awakens, praising the script and calling it “great” and insisting that it’s like The Empire Strikes Back.

Driver explained, “It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go, ‘Oooh, it’s dark,’ but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but it’s so very clear.”

“He trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s literally fun to play.”

Driver then waxed lyrical about how Rian Johnson has been able to adapt to working on Star Wars 8, and how his writing has allowed him to look at Kylo Ren in a completely new light. “Rian is coming into something that we kind of set up and he just took it to the next level in a really great way,” Driver noted. “He wrote it, too, and Rian’s writing is so clear. I learned a lot of things about my character through his writing. Some things we talked about before and some things we didn’t.”
