Lilly Singh Calls Out Media For Pitting Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston Against Each Other Amid Brangelina Split

While everyone is seemingly obsessed with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s divorce, YouTuber Lilly Singh, also known as iiSuperowmanii, reminded her subscribers that the couple’s split should not be anyone’s business. In a video called “What I Think About Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie Divorcing,” Singh also called out the media for needlessly pitting Jolie and Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston against each other.

For her Super Thursday video, Lilly Singh asked her fans on Twitter what they wanted to see this week, and a few people wanted her reaction on Brangelina’s divorce. She started the clip, however, with a disclaimer saying that the video was only made for fun. She also acknowledged that this is just how the entertainment industry works and she is just merely giving her opinion about the issue.

“I think it’s really really important. My thoughts about Brangelina. See, I feel like it’s none of my damn business. Here’s a list of things that’s my business: my bowel movement, the fact that my bra never fits, the last person I texted, my recent emojis, and last but not the least, my actual business, the one I own and operate. Those things are my business. Brangelina is nowhere on this list right now.”

iiSuperwomanii also pointed out that there are bigger things to discuss than Brangelina’s split. She wondered why people are so invested and involved in the couple’s drama, acting like they “consummated the marriage” with the couple. While Pitt and Jolie are A-list celebrities, she pointed out that they are, at the end of the day, just normal people who value their privacy.

“We don’t even give our closest friends our passcodes to our phones because we respect our privacy but we all are up in Brangelina’s bushes,” she said.

Lilly Singh also expressed frustration with how the media kept pitting Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie against each other. Being a huge advocate of girl love, Singh called for everyone to stop the hate and give everyone the respect they deserved.

“What annoys me the most is media pitting Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie against each other like why? It doesn’t have to be like that. Why does one woman’s pain have to equal another woman’s happiness? We’re more evolved than that. Where’s the girl love?”

During the #GirlLove YouTube panel at VidCon 2016, via People, Lilly Singh talked about the importance of women supporting each other in a society where girl-on-girl hate is so widespread. Much more than ever before, Singh sees the need to push for healthy female relationships.

“I think it’s so important for women to support one another and not necessarily always be hostile and compete against each other. I think I learned this when I first started YouTube and I became friends with so many people… I really wanted to just make it cool to compliment other women because I do believe we’re all in this together,” she said.

In December, Lilly Singh started an online movement called Girl Love, a campaign against girl-on-girl hate. Being one of YouTube’s biggest creators, with more than 9.8 million subscribers to date, Singh wanted to use her platform to promote a cause she truly believed in. She wanted to make the idea of women supporting women cool again, eventually breaking down the norm that girls are supposed to hate each other, something that has been ingrained in people’s minds since high school. According to Singh, Girl Love is about “supporting women across the world in whichever ways we can.”
