iOS 10: Battery Drain After Update Fix, Delete Apps And New Features

Several users have reported that an iOS 10 update is causing a rapid battery drain. Since the new operating system has several new features added, the iPhone 7 or 6 has to use more power. This will include many updates to current and new apps, which will drain your battery.

If your iPhone 7 battery doesn’t improve after a few days, you will have to wait for another update to fix potential bugs or do some iOS 10 optimizing to keep that battery functional a while longer.

One way you could fix your battery drain issue is by deleting apps you never use.

iOS 10 allows you remove built-in apps from your home screen. Apple made sure their native apps don’t take much space. However, when you get rid of user data and files there will be less power used in the background, thus saving your battery.

According to Apple, these are apps you can delete:

  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Compass
  • Contacts
  • FaceTime
  • Find My Friends
  • Home
  • iBooks
  • iCloud Drive
  • iTunes Store
  • Mail
  • Maps
  • Music
  • News
  • Notes
  • Podcasts
  • Reminders
  • Stocks
  • Tips
  • Videos
  • Voice Memos
  • Watch app
  • Weather

Apple also warns users about the potential side effects of deleting some of your built-in apps.

“If you remove Contacts, all of your contact information will remain in the Phone app. If you remove the FaceTime app, you can still make and receive FaceTime calls in Contacts and the Phone app.”

“If you remove the iBooks, Maps, Music, or Podcast apps, they won’t be available to use with CarPlay. If you try to remove the Watch app from an iPhone that’s paired with an Apple Watch, an alert asks you to unpair your Apple Watch before you can remove the app.”

To delete an app you don’t use, such as compass or stocks, simply touch and hold the app for a few seconds and click the ‘x’ to remove. Read the full instructions here at Apple.com.

C Net also warns users about the potential issues that may arise with deleting some of your home built app to save battery life.

“Right now, Apple doesn’t provide a means to set a third-party app as the default app. Meaning, if you were to delete Mail you can’t tell iOS 10 to use Outlook or Gmail in its place. That translates into lost functionality when using Siri (e.g., “Siri, send an email” will now prompt you to install Mail). A similar message will show up when you tap on an email address.”

Another way to fix your iPhone battery life is using iOS 10 battery life suggestions feature and another option is to use the low power mode feature, which you can access via settings>battery.

Other iOS features, such as raise to wake, spotlight search recommendations, and animations could all contribute to draining your battery.

You can also optimize your memory usage and determine which apps are draining the most battery by checking Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage and tap on Manage Storage under Storage.

Delete apps that you don’t use but are consuming your iPhone 7 storage.

Using airplane mode will help you save battery as your iPhone will drain your battery by trying to find a better signal. Therefore, if you are on a train or a place with poor signal simply put it on airplane mode until you get to an area with a strong signal.

If all methods fail, you could always reset your iPhone or roll back from iOS 10 to a previous version until an update fixes the battery issue.

Have you experienced poor battery life since upgrading to iOS 10? Which iPhone version are you currently using and how long does your battery last on average?
