Cam Newton’s Girlfriend Pregnant: Carolina Panthers Quarterback To Welcome Couple’s Second Child [Report]

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is about to be a dad for the second time. Hollywood Life is reporting that Newton’s girlfriend, Kia Proctor, is pregnant with the couple’s second child. Proctor just delivered the couple’s first child on Christmas Eve 2015, which means Cam and Kia are about to extremely busy with two children in diapers if the report is true.

It’s a bit surprising that this news has leaked so early, as Newton and his family were able to keep Proctor’s first pregnancy out of the media until nearly the day his son, Chosen, was born. That would be the only reason to be a little skeptical of this report, but if it is, in fact, true, then congratulations to the couple.

Newton and Proctor made their first appearance as a couple in 2013 at the Kentucky Derby, but Cam has largely kept his personal and family life quiet, which is a tremendous accomplishment in today’s media.

The Panthers quarterback has also been in the news for his lack of a stance on current race issues in society. Many people want Cam Newton to support Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality of people of color, but Cam has largely stayed quiet on the issue. In fact, Newton told GQ in an interview during the summer that America is past racism when asked about the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.

“I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not,” Newton told the magazine. “It’s not. Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation.”

It was an interesting response from Newton, who had said back in February that the reason he receives so much criticism is because he’s “an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people.”

Sports Illustrated’s Jonathan Jones, formerly of the Charlotte Observer, wrote a compelling column on Cam Newton’s history on race issues in advance of last week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. In it, Jones points out all of the times Newton has spoken on race and the backlash he’s received for not taking a stand like Kaepernick.

Possibly the most interesting part of Jones’ piece is the fact that Newton is receiving training from a man named Frank Luntz on how to talk about and respond to questions about race. Luntz is a public relations advisor who swings heavily to the right on most political issues. According to Jones, it’s unclear whether the Panthers on Newton’s camp hired Luntz, but it’s a major factor as to why Cam won’t say much publicly.

A perfect example of Cam Newton’s potential stance on race and police brutality came nearly two weeks ago, prior the the Panthers’ season opener against the Denver Broncos. Newton was specifically asked about police brutality against African-Americans, and he didn’t give an answer anywhere near Kaepernick’s.

“It’s not just police killing black people it’s… people make mistakes. People make mistakes often,” Newton told TV station WCCB. “No matter the color, no matter the age, no matter the size or what have you. In my community, it’s people that’s killing people. And that’s all across America. So it’s not a point in time where I just don’t want to fingerpoint and hold this specific entity up to a standard that we’re all not living up to.”

He continued, “Do I think it’s right? No. But I just think we all, as a whole, should be better. You know? And I don’t think skin color, I don’t think culture status, should kind of alienate certain people from others. That’s just not something that I believe in. I believe in treating everybody right.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Newton has an opinion on the shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott that happened yesterday right in Cam’s backyard of Charlotte. According to reports, Scott was waiting for his son to get off the bus when cops came looking to serve a warrant in the area. Some media reports have said that Scott was reading a book when he was shot while the police have said that he came out his car with a handgun.

Obviously, Cam Newton will have to wait for the facts to come out, but as one of the biggest names in the city, you can bet he will be asked about his opinion on the horrible outcome.
