‘Days Of Our Lives’: New Co-Head Writing Team Talk Paul, Sonny, Kayla, Steve, Gabi, JJ, And Changes To ‘DOOL’ [Spoilers]

Days Of Our Lives has been going through a lot of changes during the past few years. Some fans were not happy, but it seems like things are going in a different direction now. The NBC soap opera has a new co-head writing team. Staff writer Ryan Quan was promoted to co-head writer, replacing Josh Griffith. Quan joined Dena Higley, who remained in her position, and the two spoke about what changes they are making. They also discussed what to expect from several of the characters.

DOOL spoilers are ahead. If you do not want to know any details on what is coming next, then stop reading.

In their first interview, Dena Higley and Ryan Quan spoke to Soap Opera Digest about what Days Of Our Lives fans can expect moving forward. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, executive producer Ken Corday already teased more romance and turning away from the dark storylines. The co-head writing team revealed additional information to the magazine.

Quan’s goal is to get Days Of Our Lives back to the way it used to be. That means more romance with a little mystery and adventure mixed in. Higley said her mission is to make the soap opera a “love conquers all” kind of show. To be clear, that doesn’t mean there won’t be conflict. However, it does indicate a more positive wave of storylines are in the future. This is exactly what viewers want, so hopefully the new co-head writing team can accomplish that.

As for what to expect from the characters, Ryan and Dena felt some Salem residents were not getting much focus. That includes JJ (Casey Moss) and Gabi (Camila Banus). As Days Of Our Lives fans know, JJ and Gabi are a couple. However, it seems there might be some conflict coming up as JJ is busy with work and Gabi is getting closer to Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn).

Regarding Paul (Christopher Sean), he hasn’t received much screen time at all. Lately, that seems to be changing. As for Sonny (Freddie Smith), expect his character to evolve a little bit, which Higley explained.

“We wanted to flesh out Sonny, make him more three-dimensional, more of a player as far as a mover and a shaker just in the world in general.”

Many Days Of Our Lives fans love Steve aka “Patch” (Stephen Nichols) and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) together. Until recently, it seems that they were being driven apart by one thing or another. For those that want Steve and Kayla together, it looks like it is going to happen. The head writers said the two have experienced enough drama. Even though there is always drama on soap operas, Dena wants the couple to be together.

“… because they have earned that place on the canvas and the audience expects it of them. So we wanted to honor that.”

On social media, many Days Of Our Lives fans talked about how writers need to know the history of the soap opera. It turns out Ryan Quan knows the show very well.

“I’ve been watching for roughly 30 years, and I’ve been working here for almost 10, so I know the history really, really well and the characters, and I really have a real affection for these characters, like Marlena and Hope and Jennifer. I think what’s important is that a lot of times, the show kind of gets in trouble when it strays away from the Hortons and the Bradys and the DiMeras, so I think it helps that I have a real enthusiasm for these particular characters.”

What do you think of Ryan Quan and Dena Higley being the new co-head writing team? Are you looking forward to the changes they will be making? Will Days Of Our Lives go back to the way it used to be?
