You Could Win A PlayStation VR From Taco Bell — If You Purchase A Big Box, That Is

Were you planning on going to Taco Bell anytime soon? Well, from now through October 19, you could win a PlayStation VR headset from the Mexican fast food restaurant. Of course, there’s a caveat: You have to purchase a $5 Big Box. It could be any of the $5 boxes they offer, but it has to be a big box.

Well, you don’t have to purchase a $5 Big Box from them. Taco Bell states, directly from their website, “Just pick up any box.” Does that mean I could pick up an old Toms shoe box I have and win a PlayStation VR? No, not even close. According to Taco Bell, there is a code on the inside of the box you have to text to a number specified for a chance to win a PlayStation VR. Yes, a chance to win, not a guarantee win. This is a sweepstakes, after all. In partnership with Sony PlayStation, Taco Bell began offering this promotion on September 15.

However, getting a box and texting a number isn’t the only means of entry.

According to the official rules, there are three ways to obtain a code: “Make a Purchase,” “Without a Purchase (Mail-In Code Request),” or “Without a Purchase (Online Code Request).” The first method is fairly straightforward: Go to Taco Bell — or have someone go to Taco Bell for you — and purchase a box. Easy. The second method is the most complicated of the three: “[An] eligible consumer must legibly hand write his/her full name (no initials), complete street address (no P.O. Box), age, and valid e-mail address on a 3½” x 5? properly stamped postcard and mail it to: Taco Bell and PlayStation Game Code Request, P.O. Box 251328, West Bloomfield, MI 48325.”

I didn’t know Taco Bell could be so strict! It’s like I’m back in elementary school, told explicit rules I have to follow for submitting the answer to the daily question. The third method isn’t as simple as the first, but significantly less complicated than the second: you simply have to click a link (which doesn’t actually work, I tried!) and follow the on-screen instructions. Whichever method you choose, there’s only one entry per person for the second and third methods. (For the first, I imagine it’s unlimited, unless they catalogue your phone number, which is the most probable.)

What do you actually win, though?

You get everything you need to get the PlayStation VR headset going: a PlayStation camera, two PlayStation Move controllers, and, of course, the headset itself. Oh, and you get a $40 PlayStation Store card, but no one cares about that when you could potentially get virtual reality for free!

PSVR retails for $399 USD (not including sales tax). That’s just the headset alone. Everything that Taco Bell is giving away in this sweepstakes retails for approximately $499 USD (again, not including sales tax). You’re essentially getting the PlayStation VR Launch Bundle for free. This bundle includes a PlayStation camera, two PlayStation Move controllers, the PlayStation VR headset, and a physical copy of PlayStation VR Worlds, which includes five VR games—The London Heist, Into The Deep, VR Lunge, Danger Ball, and Scavenger’s Odyssey— in one package. That’s a great value. You still need a PlayStation 4, of course, but this is a great value nonetheless. The PlayStation VR launches on October 13.

Now, excuse me while I head to Taco Bell to get a $5 Big Box. I’m getting the $5 Craving’s Deal, which includes a cheesy gordita crunch, a beef burrito supreme, a crunchy taco, chips and “not-real” cheese, and a Mountain Dew Baja Blast (the greatest drink on the planet).
