Adam Greenberg finally got his official big league at bat last night against the New York Mets and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey who was going for his 21st win.

Greenberg, 31, who signed a one-day contract with the Miami Marlins, entered last night’s game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter. He struck out on three pitches, the first two looking and the third swinging.

“It was magical,” Geenberg said, according to ESPN. “The energy in the stadium was something I never experienced, and I don’t know if I will ever experience it again. You could just feel the genuine support. It was awesome.”

In his one previous MLB plate appearance (which didn’t count as an official at bat) with the Chicago Cubs in the ninth inning on July 9, 2005, Greenberg — who was a highly regarded prospect — was beaned on the first pitch by Marlins reliever Valerio de los Santos and never made it back to the big leagues until last night.

Yahoo! Sports notes that “Greenberg’s career line now reads: 2 PA, 1 AB, 1K, 1 HBP for a slash line of .000/.500/.000 that was  four pitches and seven years in the making.”

Greenberg, a left-handed outfielder, was released by the Cubs in 2006 and then bounced around with several minor league teams and later with the Bridgeport (Connecticut) Bluefish of the Independent League.

According to ESPN, Greenberg may not be one and done:

“The 5-foot-9 Greenberg said he hoped the game marks only the beginning of a career comeback. He didn’t play in the minor leagues this year and hasn’t been with a major league organization since 2008, but he still harbors hopes of a big league job.”

“Greenberg recently played for Israel in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic.”

The Marlins won last night’s game 4-3 in extra innings.
