‘American Horror Story’ (AHS) Nightmares Brought To Life At Universal Halloween Horror Nights

Just when you thought that haunted houses were just guys dressed up as Dracula yelling boo, welcome to the American Horror Story-inspired maze at the Universal Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios.

The Halloween Horror Nights event changes every year to scare the pants off of park-goers, and this year, the centerpiece is a super-sized ride inspired by three seasons of scary images from American Horror Story, including Murder House, Hotel, and, of course, Freak Show. If you intentionally avoid watching AHS too close to bedtime, seeing the Rubber Man and Twisty the Clown in real life might be too much for you.

The idea of AHS being brought to life outside of the images in your mind might just be the scariest concept yet for a haunted house or haunted maze. The Horror Nights creative duo of John Murdy and Michael Aiello teamed up with American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy, according to Refinery29, to bring the scariest characters and locations of AHS to life.

Visitors to the Universal Studios can wander the basement of the Murder House, the Red Room, and maybe bump into abortionist Dr. Charles Montgomery, the original owner of the house who arranged all of those charming specimen bottles seen in the opening credits. If you are unlucky enough, the Rubber Man might just tap you on the shoulder.

If American Horror Story isn’t scary enough, there are other rides/horrors inspired by The Exorcist and The Walking Dead.

Entertainment Weekly asks what is more frightening than “ghosts, clowns, vampires, mutant babies, latex-bound men, and drug addicts sewn into mattresses?” Not a lot. With the help of Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of AHS, your worst nightmares are brought to life. If regular old clowns freak you out, throw in more than a handful of the circus performers from the Freak Show and the denizens of the Hotel Cortez.

EW asked the creators of the Universal Halloween Horrors event, John Murdy and Michael Aiello, if they had their eye on AHS for some time and what they thought was the best way to bring it to park goers. The creative duo wants to keep as current as possible to please its horror-loving public. Murdy says that AHS was on the top of the list.

“We pay a lot of attention to what our fans want to see. Particularly on social media, both Mike and myself actually run our Twitter accounts for Horror Nights, specifically for that fan interaction. And over the years, there’s been this groundswell of, ‘We want to seeAmerican Horror Story.'”

But how did the Universal team decide which segments of AHS to include? Michael Aiello says that American Horror Story: Murder House, in particular, resonates and lends itself to the Halloween event.

“It was an exercise in trying to really key into… some touchstones throughout the gamut of the series. Trying to do all of the seasons at once, in our opinion, would have been a disservice to each one of the installments, because there are so many characters and environments. To narrow it down to three on this occasion, to be able to give each season its worth, so to speak, was definitely a path we wanted to go down.”

Since both Murder House and Hotel are actual places people could visit, they lent themselves as no-brainers to a haunted house-type event for Universal Studios Halloween.

Maybe attending the AHS scarefest in the daytime might make it a bit less scary?
