New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills: 5 Takeaways From Week 2 Of 2016 NFL Season

On Thursday Night Football, the New York Jets faced the Buffalo Bills in an important battle of winless AFC East rivals at New Era Stadium in Orchard Park, NY.

A game that wasn’t projected to be incredibly exciting turned out to be absolutely enthralling, as both teams struggled to defend and ran roughshod over each other on offense.

New York essentially cemented a victory late in the fourth quarter when Matt Forte ran for a 12-yard touchdown. The Bills subsequently scored a touchdown to draw within six points but, after a Jets punt, were left with just 18 seconds on their final drive and weren’t able to muster a miraculous comeback.

This was a crucial win for New York as the New York City media would have had a field day with the Jets had they lost to Buffalo for the sixth-consecutive time.

So, what did we learn from this game? Find out with these five takeaways.

Matt Forte’s Demise Was Prematurely Reported

Heading into the season, NFL experts were certain Matt Forte was going to struggle in 2016, saying things like “he’s just too old” and “isn’t the same guy.” We now have a two-game sample size from the 30-year-old Forte that suggests otherwise, as he followed a strong performance in Week 1 against Cincinnati with 100 yards rushing and three TDs on the ground.

Clearly, whispers of his demise were prematurely reported.

Darrelle Revis Is No Longer A Top Cornerback

Darrelle Revis, once thought of by many as the NFL’s premier cover cornerback during his prime, was torched for the second-straight week and the Jets should be worried.

Thankfully, Marcus Williams made an interception just like he did in Week 1, and Buster Skrine added a solid performance with a pass deflection and a tackle. Revis, 31, has dealt with plenty of injuries in his career and it’s fair to assume they might be catching up with him.

Rex Ryan’s Defense Is Nowhere Near As Good As He Thinks It Is

After a solid showing in Week 1 in which the Bills held the Baltimore Ravens to just 13 points in a losing effort, Buffalo’s defense was torched for 123 rushing yards, three rushing TDs, an embarrassing 374 passing yards, one passing TD, and 37 points by the Jets.

Put simply, Ryan’s overrated defense was abysmal. Rex is widely thought of as a defensive genius, and better turn things around in a jiffy as he isn’t going to last long in Buffalo if this unit doesn’t show up in 2016.

Bills Need Another Elite Playmaker On Offense

Since the beginning of the 2015 season, Buffalo has put Tyrod Taylor, Sammy Watkins, and LeSean McCoy in a tough spot as the Bills are simply devoid of depth at the skill positions.

Marquise Goodwin and Greg Salas were solid against the Jets, but they don’t intimidate anyone. New York ‘s secondary didn’t play incredibly well, but was able to place extra emphasis on stopping Watkins and held him to two receptions for 20 yards.

With another elite playmaker in the mix, it might not have been the case.

Quincy Enunwa Is Legit
After a solid Week 1 showing in which he accumulated seven receptions for 54 yards and one TD against Cincinnati, third-year wide receiver Quincy Enunwa proved it was no fluke with six receptions for 92 yards against Buffalo.

Opponents already have enough trouble defending Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, which means Enunwa will see loosened coverage almost every game and has an opportunity to blossom into a big-time contributor player this season.

Considering the Jets don’t get any production in the pass attack from their tight ends, what Quincy’s doing is huge. Expect more of the same going forward.
