Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Isn’t Dead: Latest Presidential Poll Places Clinton Five Points Ahead Of Donald Trump

It’s been a rough week for Hillary Clinton. Unable to make an appearance on the campaign trail and struggling to fend off health rumours, it’d be easy to assume that the Democratic candidate’s campaign is flagging. However, the Clinton campaign isn’t dead. In fact, the former first lady is now leading her Republican rival Donald Trump by 5 points in a new national poll. Whilst still being a considerable drop in comparison to similar polling last month, it’s a pleasing result for the Clinton campaign.

According to Politico, the latest poll from Quinnipiac University puts Clinton head to head with Donald Trump since her pneumonia controversy. With Donald Trump as their only other option, 48 percent said they’d vote for Hillary Clinton, whilst 43 percent said they’d choose the Republican candidate. Otherwise, when given the option of other candidates, three percent said they’d opt for a third party candidate, whilst six percent were still undecided, leaving some room for growth for both Clinton and Trump.

That being said, Clinton’s results have dropped since Quinnipiac University’s last polling in August. Last month, Clinton was leading Trump by 51 to 41 percent nationwide, however, the Republican candidate has been gradually catching up with Clinton over the course of the month.

The news isn’t all that promising for either candidate, however. Majorities of both Clinton and Trump voters said that their main reason for supporting the candidate was out of opposition to the other candidate. Putting that into numbers, 54 percent of Clinton’s supporters said that their main reason for voting for the former secretary of state was to prevent Donald Trump from becoming president, whilst 66 percent of Donald Trump’s supporters said exactly the same thing about Hillary Clinton.

Respondents to Quinnipiac’s polling were able to agree on one thing, though. 69 percent of those polled believe this will be an incredibly close election, whilst only 22 percent believe the election will see a landslide for either of the two candidates. That being said, Republicans and Trump supporters were more likely to believe the election will be close, whilst Clinton supporters and Democrats were more likely to believe that their candidate will comfortably secure a landslide victory in November’s election.

Clinton has been absent from the campaign trail over the past few days, after falling ill with pneumonia. Analysts and commentators largely expected a greater falling in polling for Clinton whilst she was away from campaigning and Donald Trump had almost the entire national stage to himself.

However, that hasn’t necessarily been the case. According to CNN Politics, most of Hillary Clinton’s campaign duties have been picked up by her husband and former president Bill Clinton, whilst Hillary recovers from pneumonia in New York. Whilst Bill Clinton has managed to keep the Clinton campaign present while their candidate is out ill, he’s becoming less of an effective surrogate for the campaign than initially thought. Separate polling suggests that Bill Clinton’s message isn’t as strong as it once was amongst voters.

That being said, the Clinton campaign has no shortage of stars to roll out in support of their candidate. High profile names including President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have both made appearances for the Clinton campaign whilst she’s been ill. Similarly, Democratic party heavyweights including both Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have made supporting performances.

Despite their candidate being out of action, the Clinton campaign still appears to be very much alive and well.
