NFL Rumors: San Francisco 49ers Could Trade For Jimmy Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers are fresh off of a 28-0 victory in Week 1 over the Los Angeles Rams. They are still expected to miss the playoffs and hold a top 10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft when everything is said and done. Even with the recent surge of hope following their Monday night win, the 49ers have a lot of needs.

What is their biggest need at this point in time? Finding a legitimate starting quarterback that they can build around moving forward.

Blaine Gabbert is not going to get the job done and neither is Colin Kaepernick. Chip Kelly will likely want to find an upgrade at some point in the future and there is one name that would make a lot of sense.

Jimmy Garoppolo is the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots with Tom Brady serving a four-game suspension. There is no telling whether Bill Belichick will be willing to trade Garoppolo after the season. That being said, there is a good chance that Garoppolo will want to play somewhere next season, whether that be with the Patriots or somewhere else.

Brad Berreman of FanSided opined that the 49ers could be a potential landing spot for Garoppolo.

In Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals in a key Sunday night matchup, Garoppolo came through in a big way. He completed 24 of his 33 pass attempts for 264 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions. Those numbers led the Patriots to a huge 23-21 victory over the Cardinals and proved all the critics that didn’t think the Patriots could win without Brady wrong.

San Francisco would have to give up a decent price in order to pry Garoppolo away from New England. Belichick won’t deal him just to make a trade, but a combination of a decent trade package in return and his young quarterback wanting to play could persuade him to make a move.

At 24 years old, Garoppolo is about to head into the prime of his career. San Francisco would be wise to aggressively pursue a deal for the talented young quarterback and make him their long-term franchise quarterback.

Garoppolo has the invaluable experience of sitting behind Brady for the first two seasons of his career. Coming into the 2016 season, it was obvious that the things he learned while watching the future Hall of Famer prepared him to take the field and succeed immediately as a starter himself.

That being said, the 49ers aren’t going to be the only team interested in acquiring Garoppolo. Other teams like the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and even the New Orleans Saints could show interest. There are likely other teams on top of those three that would consider a move for the Patriots’ quarterback as well.

It will be interesting to see how Garoppolo performs throughout the next three starts he makes this season. He may end up flopping over the next few games, although that doesn’t seem too likely.

Rumors will begin flying about Garoppolo following his four starts this season. When Brady steps back on the field to retake the starting job, Garoppolo will immediately be talked about as a trade chip. There is a chance that the Patriots will hold onto Garoppolo until Brady retires, although there is no telling how many more seasons the 39-year-old quarterback has left in him.

Expect to see the 49ers start checking in on quarterbacks in the 2017 NFL Draft, as well as on the trade market and in free agency. Garoppolo could very well end up being the best fit and it wouldn’t be shocking to see the two teams talk about the possibility of a deal.
