Watch Feyenoord Vs. Manchester United Live Stream: Start Time, Preview Of UEFA Europa League Opener

Manchester United missed out on UEFA Champions League competition this season, but as fifth-place Premier League finishers, they qualified for the Europa League and on Thursday will open their campaign in Rotterdam against Feyenoord, last year’s third-place Dutch Eredivisie side in a match that will stream live from De Kuip.

Manchester United currently sit in fourth place on the English table with three wins and a loss, while Feyenoord, which features former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt, sit atop the Dutch standings, with a perfect record of five wins in their first five league contests.

But in a surprising move, new Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho has dropped his team’s captain and highest paid player, striker Wayne Rooney, from the squad that will face Feyenoord in Rotterdam.

Watch Mourinho explain his reasoning in the video below.

“He has played every game since the start of the season. He has also played 90 minutes for the England team,” Mourinho said of his captain, who will turn 31 on October 24. “I want him to be fresh for the next Premier League match. In the position he plays, I have lots of solutions and people that it has been really hard to have a chance.”

Manchester United and Feyenoord have met only two times in their histories, both matches coming in the 1997-1998 UEFA Champions League group stage. Manchester United swept both of those games.

Though winning the Europa League carries with it a prize of automatic Champions League qualification, Mourinho appears less than enthusiastic about the competition.

“It’s not the big dream of every big player, but we are not in the Champions League,” the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager said. “We have to look at it with respect. I think we want to do well in the competition and for a club of our dimension to do well is not to be out in the group phase.”
