Just in case it wasn’t clear from the teaser trailer, Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel will be cold, gritty, and realistic just like Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy before it.

Superman has had a long, troubled history in Hollywood. From the fabled “Superman curse” to Superman Returns (which would have been great if it had been released as Superman III in 1983) the DC Comics character has struggled to make it out of “development hell” and onto the big screen in a satisfying way. Enter producer Christopher Nolan and screenwriter David S. Goyer, who were solicited to give the Man of Steel his latest go, albeit in as serious and realistic a way as has ever been seen before.

“Christopher Nolan and I have been trying to bring the naturalism of the Batman trilogy,” Goyer says. “Our approach has always been naturalist, realistic; we always try to imagine these stories as if they could happen in the same world in which we live. It is not an easy thing with Superman, and this does not necessarily mean that it will be a dark film, but in working on this reboot we are thinking about what would happen if a story like this really happened. How would people react to this? What impact would the presence of Superman in the real world have? What I like to do are stories set in ‘genres’ which, however, are not cartoons, or comics. I did the same thing with Da Vinci’s Demons, and I will do the same with The Man of Steel.”

Making Superman current and realistic will be a tough sell. Let’s face it, how in the heck do you reconcile an immigrant from an alien planet who can fly, shoot lasers out of his eyes, and punch through walls with the post-modern world?

Depends. If Man of Steel “focuses in on the suspicion, the doubt, fear and hatred with which today’s world would inevitably view a super-powered outsider, and force Henry Cavill’s Superman to face that, then Snyder will certainly have blazed a trail,” notes ScreenRant. When it comes to Superman, I am ever-skeptical, and history justifies my being so. Then again, I was saying in 2007 that pretty boy Heath Ledger would never be able to pull off a convincing Joker, and look what happened.
