Cuban Cancer Drug In U.S. Clinical Trials

Miami, FL (AHN) – A Canadian drug firm has been able to get a U.S. government approval to test in the country a cancer drug made in Cuba.
The drug nimotuzumab, which prevents the growth of cancer cells, is undergoing clinical trials at the University of Florida and other U.S. institutions, according to YM Biosciences, which co-owns the drug developer CIMYM together with the Havana-based biotech lab Center of Molecular Immunology.
The trial of the injectable drug was made possible after YM applied for an exception to the Cuban embargo before the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. The application was approved early August.
The clinical trials are expected to last three years. By that time, the U.S. embargo on Cuba should be lifted before the drug, which prolongs life of cancer patients, could be sold in the U.S.
