Wilson, who finished his first season with the Angels posting a 13-10 record with 172 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.83, said his elbow has been bothering him for a couple of months and that he had already picked out a time to have the operation.

“A quick visit to Dr. [Lewis] Yocum, a 40-minute procedure, and I’ll be out,” C.J. told reporters.

He is expected to be ready for spring training in February.

While Wilson was confident about his return to full strength in 2013, he was quick to point out the elbow injury caused a host of problems during the 2012 season.

“I tried to make a million adjustments to get around it… because my arm doesn’t work right,” Wilson said Monday after giving up two runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Mariners. “But you’re paid to go out there play regardless of whether you’re 100%.”

The LA Times notes that one of the adjustments Wilson’s elbow troubles forced him to make was to stand as far on the left side of the rubber as he could in order to get a better “angle for throwing sinkers.”

According to SB Nation, the 31-year-old left-hander underwent the same elbow surgery at the end of 2008 when he was still pitching in relief for the Texas Rangers, then went on to put together his best three seasons as a big-leaguer.

For his career, C.J. Wilson is holding down a 3.65 ERA with 810 strikeouts in just over 900 innings pitched.
