‘Vikings’ Season 5 Rumors: Travis Fimmel Won’t Return This Season?

Though Vikings Season 5 is still filming in Ireland, the latest Vikings Season 5 rumors suggest that there’s one person who won’t be returning to the screen when the show finally returns to the History Channel in early 2017. And though we knew it was bound to happen sooner or later (we all do know our Vikings history, after all), it’s still pretty devastating to know that Travis Fimmel, the breakout star of the show, won’t be returning this season!

That’s, of course, if you believe The Bitbag, whose latest Vikings Season 5 rumors have all but confirmed that Travis Fimmel won’t be returning for the entirety of this season, because his character, Ragnar Lothbrok, will be killed off. But the truly interesting question that needs to be asked for this upcoming season is, who will take Ragnar’s place as the leader of Kattegat?

Early previews suggest that Lagertha and Aslaug will fight it out — in part because Lagertha will be seeking her revenge against her longtime romantic rival, and in part because she was, and always will be, the preferred Queen of Kattegat — but they also suggest that, before he goes off to Valhalla, Ragnar will be helping his son Ivar the Boneless ascend to power (which would make sense, given our Vikings history). With Bjorn off conquering the Mediterranean, and his other sons not quite fit for power, Ivar (who, we’ll recall, is being “trained” by Floki in the art of war and being a Viking) is the natural choice to ascend the throne and take his father’s place.

This news about Ragnar’s death is all but confirmed by Christian Daily, whose latest round of Vikings Season 5 rumors were confirmed when they spoke to Michael Hirst, the creator of the series, who stated that this season will see the focus shift to other characters besides Ragnar.

“Floki is now going through very deep and profound changes, and reevaluating his life, his relationships, and this will continue. This is a very big thread in the story moving forward. I can’t exaggerate how big these changes will be. It’s Floki having to reimagine his whole life, who he is, what he’s here for. It will lead to quite extraordinary outcomes.”

Gustaf Skarsgård, who plays Floki on the show, has added many dimensions to this troubled character, so it should be interesting to see where he takes his ever-evolving shipmaker this season. Interesting bit of trivia: Gustaf is the younger brother of heart-throb actor Alexander Skarsgård, and they’re both the sons of legendary Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård.

But don’t let these latest Vikings Season 5 rumors lead you to cry for Travis Fimmel, because he’s now a bona fide Hollywood star thanks to his work on Vikings. According to Showbiz Junkies, he’s slated to star in the upcoming heist film, Finding Steve McQueen, alongside Kate Bosworth and Forest Whitaker. This won’t be the first time Travis’s name will be attached to a big Hollywood project; the success of the summer’s blockbuster movie, Warcraft, proved that Fimmel can carry a film on his own.

Anthony Mastromauro, who is one of the producers of Finding Steve McQueen, told the outlet that he’s very excited to have Travis on board:

“I’m excited to see this caliber of talent come together on a project that has been near and dear to my heart for some time. Mark Steven Johnson has put together a wonderful cast led by Travis Fimmel, who I believe is a movie star in the making, and I’m thrilled to have him lead a truly fantastic cast.”
