Los Angeles (AHN) – California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday declared a state of emergency over wildfires burning in Los Angeles and Monterey counties that have burned 13,000 acres and forced the evacuations of hundreds of houses.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated to emergency shelters as firefighters continue battling the blazes.
Officials say the cause of the fires is still being investigated.

The southern California wildfires started Aug. 26 under dry conditions and winds that helped spread the flames.

Observers expect the flames to spread today, pushed along by strong upper-level winds.
