Are the Mets for sale?

Allthough Owner Fred Wilpon is denying these reports, it seems reasonable that the Mets are actually for sale. Wilpon and his family has lost reportedly lost over 700 million dollars in the Bernie Madoff investment scheme. Since the Mets are worth nearly 912 million it seems reasonable to assume the Wilpon family would look to recoup the money lost in the Madoff affair.

The Mets have been mired in a extremely disappointing season where they have had more players on the disabled list then on the active roster. they have a few disgruntled stars, are hopelessly behind in both their division and the National League Wild Card Race, and it seems General Manager Omar Minaya has no idea how to rebuild this team.

Those facts alone would lead as to assume that the Mets were for sale, not even factoring in the big loss of money by the Wilpon family. It really comes down to this no matter how rich one family is losing 700 million dollars is a significant blow.

More than that though Wilpon hasn’t been that great of an owner. He has let Minaya assemble a roster full of high priced free agents that does pretty well in the regular season until the month of August. then almost predictably the team collapses in on itself. Since winning the NL east in 2006, the Mets have blown a seven game divisional lead in 2007, and lost a wild card birth on the last game of the season in 2008.

After a disastrous 2009, and one of the saddest seasons to open a new stadium in the history of the MLB how could we not assume the Wilpon’s would be looking to unload the Mets.
