Pablo Escobar wife struggles after he was shot

Narcos Pablo Escobar Wife Tata Today, And The Medellin Cartel

Pablo Escobar is no doubt one of the most famous drug lords of all time. And in Colombia today, he is still a very polarizing figure partly due to the immense violence he used against his enemies on one hand and his generosity to the poor on the other. He also made sure he carved a loving, caring figure in the public domain, all while refuting claims that he was a drug dealer earning billions each year from the trade.

According to an interview with Carlos Toro undertaken by PBS, the Medellin cartel, which was led by Pablo Escobar, had so much money that at one time, Carlos Lehder, who was in charge of drug shipments to the United States, chose to throw boxes of money out of a plane all over Nassau to upset the Bahamian government. Apparently, the government had an agreement with Pablo Escobar’s cartel to sometimes make arrests for publicity, so as to look good to other governments. But at one time Carlos Lehder’s friends were arrested and not immediately released, which made him angry.

Back to Pablo Escobar, he and his family lived a life of lavish opulence in his heyday. Just to get a glimpse of the out-of-this-world lifestyle, he had a ranch that had a zoo, which featured wildlife ranging from elephants and ostriches to antelopes and hippopotamuses. He named it Hacienda Nápoles.

The estate also had its own private airport, fleet of luxury cars, a kart-racing track and a bullring. According to Juan Pablo Escobar, Escobar’s son, his father’s estate had a lot of servants and if the children wanted some special fast foods, a helicopter could always be sent out to bring whatever they wanted. Of course, things took a turn for the worse when Pablo Escobar began fighting the Colombian government.

This was after it decided to try and prosecute drug traffickers like Pablo Escobar after Lara Bonilla, the Minister of Justice, was murdered on his orders. According to a revelation by Juan David Ochoa, a member of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin cartel, the drug lord did not consult anyone when he decided to eliminate the minister. This is as reported by PBS.

With the government forces and vigilante group Los Pepes on Pablo Escobar’s heels, he and his family went into hiding. At one point, his son Juan recounts how their father burned a million dollars to keep his sister warm on a chilly night while on the run. On the day that he was tracked down and killed, his phone call to his family is said to have helped authorities trace his location.

Following his death, his wife Maria Victoria Henao had little money. She and her family were in constant fear for their lives as they were now surrounded by both old and new enemies. The family stayed for short periods in numerous countries, with many governments refusing them asylum. The family was finally able to settle down in Argentina.

They lived a quiet life under different names until 1999, when their identity was discovered. In 2000, Maria Victoria Henao, who had changed her name to Maria Isabel Santos Caballero, was jailed for more than a year for money laundry, but was later on released for lack of evidence. She offered the following statement to the media in regards to the imprisonment.

“I am a prisoner in Argentina for being Colombian. They want to try the ghost of Pablo Escobar because they want to prove that Argentina is combatting drug trafficking.”

This is as reported by Bustle. Since 1999, Pablo Escobar’s wife has stayed under the radar and has rarely been spotted in the public. And as for members of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin cartel, Jorge Luis Ochoa died in 2013 due to a heart attack, and his brother Fabio Ochoa is currently in a prison in Jesup, Georgia, following extradition to the United States in 2001. Carlos Lehder is also in an American prison. As for Jose Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha, he was killed in 1989 during a shootout with Colombian authorities.
