HughesNet has updated its service to a new 4th generation satellite broadband system capable of delivering customers up to 15 Mbps download speeds with 2 Mbps upload.

The service is a nice intermediary offering for the more than 19 million American’s who are unable to receive traditional broadband service through fixed-line broadband services.

The new service launches on the same day that DishNet arrives on the open market, a service in partnership with Hughes that brings faster internet speeds to Dish Network satellite customers.

HughesNet hopes to deliver its new faster internet service to customers willing to pay a premium for rural broadband service. For $50 per month, customers can pick up 10 Mbps download a 1 Mbps upload with a 20GB data cap. $80 per month gives customers a 30GB limit and 2 Mbps upload.

For rural customers wanting more, Hughes is offering a $100 per month plan that comes equipped with 15 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up with a 40GB monthly allowance.

Current and new customers both qualify for the new 4Gen system and can register with Hughes.

Satellite broadband service has come a long way; however, customers looking to take advantage of YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and other video streaming services may find that even 40GB per month runs out faster then they may have hoped.

Would you be willing to throw down upwards of $100 for the right to access high speed internet service? The price may be steep, but anything is better than rural DSL service at ultra-low speeds.
