Lady Gaga Heartbroken Over Taylor Kinney On New Single ‘Perfect Illusion?’

Lady Gaga’s new song “Perfect Illusion” is finally here. The singer has been teasing fans about her highly-anticipated new single and big pop music comeback all week long. Lady Gaga officially premiered the song on iHeart Radio on Thursday night, Sept. 8.

Now that the song is here, some of her fans are underwhelmed because it’s not in the same vein as her previous lead singles, “Just Dance,” “Born This Way,” and “Applause.” Instead of a dance song, they got a track in which Gaga sings about love turning out to be a “perfect illusion.” However, the song itself has a very ’80s synth vibe, although most reports have called it a disco-rock single. Some are also disappointed with Gaga’s vocals, even when the song changes.

Take this following review from The Guardian.

“Gaga belts the title over and over like a mantra but it never becomes any more profound. The real Perfect Illusion isn’t love; it’s a blank metaphor her voice tries and fails to imbue with meaning.”

According to NME.com, “Perfect Illusion” perfectly captures why Gaga is one of pop’s most exciting and innovative artists. With this song and Christina Aguilera’s new song “Telepathy” for Netflix’s The Get Down soundtrack, we may all finally transport back to the disco era.

“It’s no ‘Bad Romance’ (what is?), but its booming disco influence and sheer force make it a formidable return from one of pop’s most exciting stars.”

On the song, Gaga is repeatedly heard singing, “It wasn’t love, it wasn’t love/It was a perfect illusion.” It’s clear that the song is about her recent split from fiancé Taylor Kinney earlier this year. “Perfect Illusion” gives Gaga’s fans a glimpse into her upcoming album, which may include more songs about heartbreak in true disco style.

Lady Gaga’s fans saw the moment their beloved Mother Monster cried when she heard her new song play on the radio on Thursday night. Gaga took to Snapchat to shoot a clip of herself listening to her new song after it premiered on the radio across the country. Gaga was so overcome with emotion that she started breaking down and crying in her Berlin hotel room as soon as the song started playing, according to the Daily Mail.

Gaga has since opened up about those lyrics on “Perfect Illusion.” Fans have been wanting to know if Kinney was the subject of her new song.

“The song is about modern ecstasy,” Gaga described the track at the iHeart Music Summit back in August, according to E! Online. “We found our sweet, simple, ragey way of saying it…. I get this sick adrenaline rush every time I hear it.”

And, according to Hollywood Life, Gaga revealed to BBC’s Radio 1 that the song was actually Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker’s idea. Gaga wrote “Perfect Illusion” with music producer Mark Ronson, BloodPop, along with Parker.

“I believe many of us are wondering why there are so many fake things around us. How do we navigate through social media? How do we look through these images that we know are filtered and altered, and decipher what is reality and what is a perfect illusion? There are also a lot of things on the internet that are not reality. And I think people are pressured to keep that personal illusion going on in their real lives. So this song is about raging against it and letting it go. It’s about wanting people to re-establish that human connection.”

Here are some of the lyrics to Lady Gaga’s new single “Perfect Illusion,” as seen in her Instagram posts below.
