‘Supernatural’ Stars Tease The End Of The Series And The Final Finale

Supernatural is the longest running show currently airing on the CW network, and can also claim that same title for the former WB network. That doesn’t guarantee it will be around forever. CW network president Mark Pedowitz has promised that Supernatural would always have a home on the network, provided ratings remain stable and Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, the series stars, are willing to remain on the show. That only makes sense.

The big draw for Supernatural is the sibling relationship between Sam and Dean Winchester, so losing that dynamic may cause Supernatural to lose its loyal fanbase, anyway. That leaves just one question. What are Padalecki and Ackles’ thoughts on the end of the series?

Supernatural Stars Share Their Thoughts On The Inevitable End

When asked about how they view the end of the series, both Jared and Jensen tell Entertainment Weekly that they try not to look that far down the line, saying that they basically take it one day, or one event, at a time. For the Supernatural boys, the next event to grab their attention is Episode 300, which is an impressive milestone in and of itself.

“In a marathon, I keep my sights on that next mile, wherever that might be,” Ackles says. “And 300’s a good number to work for.”

Supernatural executive producer Bob Singer has also talked about Episode 300, using it as a random point at which to end the series in a hypothetical conversation. He says he has talked with Padalecki and Ackles about wanting to know in advance when Supernatural would sign off for good. Using Episode 300 as an example, Singer says everyone is in agreement that the series will end with a much-deserved finale.

With 265 episodes under their belt, Episode 300 isn’t that far off. Season 12 of Supernatural is set to premiere this year, so Episode 300 would bring Ackles and Padalecki through Season 14 either as a regular season if they chose to ride it out for a full story arc or as a shortened installment.

While neither Bob Singer or Jensen Ackles have confirmed that Episode 300 will be the end for Supernatural, Padalecki spells certain doom for the Supernatural run with his comments on the subject.

“If we don’t make it to 300, I think Ackles and I will both be truly bummed,” Padalecki says. “When we get to 300, I think Ackles and I will think it might be time to say bye. There’s a chance that changes, but we certainly do not take it for granted that we’re going to make it to 300.”

Ackles And Padalecki Still Have A Love For Supernatural

According to Buddy TV, Jared says that he’s learned plenty from his time on Supernatural and he doesn’t just mean the world of television production. Padalecki says he’s learned from his own Supernatural character and he’s learned other important lessons from Dean Winchester. He also says that he wants to tell the Supernatural story for as long as possible, but doesn’t want the series to outstay its welcome.

As for Jensen Ackles, he says he won’t consider ending as long as both he and Jared are passionate about the work, adding that he hasn’t felt or observed any loss of love for telling the Supernatural story.

“To this day, I have not really ever sensed that from myself or him. They’re paying us to bring that little bit of magic to what they wrote, and I still feel that magic today,” says the Supernatural star. “The day that I don’t feel that magic will be a very sad day, and I hope that day never comes. I’d like to get to 300 before that day comes.”

Season 12 of Supernatural will premiere on Thursday, October 13, on the CW network.
