Eagles need to define Vick’s role

After more then two years Michael Vick returned to the NFL last night. While admittedly playing at only 70% Vick did complete all four of his passes, ran for one yard, and even lined up in the slot receiver position. While last night’s return was certainly a success for Vick personally, Head Coach Andy Reid and Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg must find a suitable role for Vick with the Eagles.

In the NFL it is said if you have two Quarterbacks you really have none. Donovan McNabb is the starter and has been the starter from quite some time. Having a weapon like Vick merely backing him up would be a complete waste for both player and team. There really is two different agendas here, the Eagles are trying to win a Super Bowl before their window of opportunity closes. Vick on the other hand is playing for a big contract and a starting job on another team. Somehow both of these agendas must be married to insure on the field success for both player and team.

It seems likely that Vick could be an effective decoy. Anytime he is on the field the opposing Defensive coordinator has to account for him. Vick could also be a excellent wide out, or running back, or punt returner. Vick is a special kid of talent and it is now up to the Eagles coaching staff to exploit that talent to help this team win.
