Natalie Portman Pregnant With Her Second Child

Natalie Portman is pregnant with her second child. She happily showed off her baby bump in a clingy white dress at the premiere of her film Planetarium at the Venice Film Festival on September 8. Natalie and 39-year-old husband Benjamin Millepied also have a son named Alepho who is five years old. Portman met her husband in 2010 while filming Black Swan. They got married in 2012 and lived in Paris for two years before moving back to Los Angeles.

Portman and her husband have kept their son out of the public eye, but she spoke about him with Jimmy Kimmel not long ago. She played Queen Amidala in three Star Wars films – Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (1999), Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith (2005). Us Weekly reports that Natalie told Jimmy that she won’t be letting Alepho see those movies anytime soon.

“He [hasn’t seen], but he knows about it, of course. It’s kind of a shame because you know when I made it, I was like, ‘This is going to be the coolest thing, one day when I have kids, I can show them.’ And boys, of course, are obsessed with it and know all about it before they’ve seen it. Then I realized: I die in the movies. I feel like it’s kind of a scary thing to show your kid.”

Natalie Portman spoke at length about parenting in a report from the New York Times’ T Magazine in July. In addition to acting, the 35-year-old Israeli Portman has also directed three movies – the Hebrew-language film titled A Tale of Love and Darkness(2015), Eve (2008), and New York, I Love You(2008). In the NYT report, Natalie compared the role of director to that of a parent.

“I think being a mother made me realize how maternal the role of director is. It made me much calmer under stress, because there’s that weird parent thing you develop, that when things get really bad, your voice gets calm and your blood pressure slows, and you can make everything okay again. And things get bad and stressful easily on films.”

It’s not only the ability to remain calm and steady that Natalie believes is a valuable skill for both parenting and directing, though. The nurturing aspect of parenting comes in useful in directing as well.

“You look at the people you work with and think: How can I treat them, and what can I tell them so that they can do their best work? Because that’s sort of what directing is – talking to people in a way that can best unlock their potential. Of course, with directing, the purpose is to help them realize your vision. With parenting, the purpose is for your kid to realize his. But it’s a similar skill.”

Natalie Portman’s decision to keep her children out of the spotlight aligns with how she handles her celebrity, avoiding social media and pretty much any public attention outside of her film career. As E! Online reported, Natalie doesn’t share photos of friends or family on social media and doesn’t talk about things like her political views or favorite TV shows. She has indicated that privacy laws are one of the things Portman really enjoyed about living in Paris. In the City of Lights, the express consent of an individual is required before publishing any private information about them.

In addition to her appearances in the Star Wars movies, Portman recently played Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in Jackie, which also premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
