Trump 6 Points Behind Clinton In Latest Election Poll: Potential Landslide For Clinton?

Despite the concerted efforts by the Donald Trump campaign to spin the election narrative their way, the latest national polls clearly suggest a landslide for Clinton come November. In the weeks following the shakeup of Trump’s staff, his campaign has desperately attempted to give the impression that Trump had finally embraced the semi mythical “pivot” and is now a kinder, gentler candidate. But the current polls make it quite clear that the New Trump still resembles the Old Trump too much for the liking of most voters.

One poll by NBC– the NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll – shows that Hillary Clinton nationwide still holds a six-point lead over Donald Trump in a head-to-head race. Even when the independent candidates are added to make it a four person race, Clinton maintains a four-point lead.

Another poll carried out by the Washington Post shows a similar result. But popular votes don’t tell the full story since it seems likely that the electoral college vote gap will be even greater. With states like Virginia and Florida seemingly firmly in the Democratic column and even some Republican states like Georgia at play, the idea of a landslide seems a definite possibility.

From Trump’s gloating about the shooting of a young woman in Chicago to his disastrous foray into diplomacy in Mexico, Trump has continued to be himself – leading the Republican Party pundits to fear such a Clinton landslide. However much Trump’s new handlers attempt to massage his message and control his rants, the simple truth is that Trump has no filter between his brain and his mouth.

Essentially, Donald Trump is perfectly willing to say any outrageous thing that pops into his head. Not only is the result alarming for the average American voter, it leads to a great deal of inconsistency in the Trumpian message.

Of course, Trump’s almost daily waffling on the issue of deportations has made him even more unpopular with Hispanics and increased the chances of an unprecedented landslide victory for Democrats. One day, Trump is declaring he will build a wall and immediately commence deportations of “illegals” when he’s president. The next day, he is supposedly softening his position.

After this, he’s down in Mexico meeting with its president and mentioning nothing about walls. Then – quite literally the next day – he’s back in Phoenix suggesting he will ship 11 million people out of the country and that Mexico will fund the wall or else. Apparently, Trump’s positions on the issues come with an extremely short expiration date.

Since Trump has antagonized most women – 50 percent of the population, most Hispanics – 17 percent of the population, and African-Americans – 13 percent of the population, it’s extremely difficult to see how the Republicans can avoid a disastrous landslide. Given that Trump is also losing the college vote and Catholics, he seems to have narrowed himself down to male, white, minimally educated Protestants.

Aiming at a niche market might be fine when marketing a business, but it’s not exactly a winning strategy for a presidential campaign. The window of opportunity for the Republicans to turn things around has become infinitesimally small. But in many ways, if Trump and the Republicans do face a disastrous landslide defeat at the hands of Hillary Clinton this year, it will largely be a disaster of their own making.

Had the Republican Party establishment been willing to take a stand against Trump sooner and more forcefully, their prospects in the upcoming election might have been quite a bit brighter. There is no arguing with the fact that Hillary Clinton herself has a number of significant negatives, and she certainly isn’t the most popular person in America. But all of Clinton’s negatives melt away with the presence of Donald Trump on the Republican ticket.
