As ‘Outlander’ Filming Starts, What Can Fans Expect For Jamie And Claire? [Spoilers]

As 2016 begins to wind down, avid Starz viewers are getting more and more excited. Why? Because with the new year will also come a new season of the Starz hit, Outlander.

The series, based off of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling novels, premiered in August of 2014. Since then, it has not only been the source of praise and admiration for long-time fans of the novels, but has also accrued numerous other followers who are intrigued by the prevalence of Scottish accents, the beauty of Highland scenery, and the chemistry of Jamie and Claire.

After all, who isn’t excited to see the beloved couple reunited after 20 years apart, having been separated by time and space?

WARNING: Spoilers ahead!

Last week, the Inquisitr reported that filming had begun for Season 3 of Outlander, saying that while Catriona Balfe (Claire) was yet to join the cast, Sam Heughan (Jamie) was “filming separate scenes prior to their reunion.”

The source material for Season 3 is Gabaldon’s third book in the series, Voyager. For anyone who is familiar with the books, they know what this means. For those who are not familiar, then let’s get you up to date.

The plot may seem crazy, but it’ll probably also be great.

“Voyager is nuts in a way that neither Outlander nor Dragonfly in Amber are,” Inverse reports. “Voyager is nuts in a way that neither Outlander nor Dragonfly in Amber are. There are dramatic reunions that put soap operas to shame, improbable coincidences, pirates, and voodoo zombies. Because of that, it tends to either be a reader’s favorite of the series or their least favorite. Even if you’re in the latter camp, you should still be excited for its screen adaptation.”

Why should you be excited? Well, because this season will likely be packed with action, drama, and, yes, even some romance. If we’re honest, there’s got to be a lot of romance, considering the fact that the two main characters will see each other for the first time in 20 years.

We will finally see the Frasers united as a family.

Remember that we left Claire living her other life in the mid-20th century while Jamie was left fighting the battle of Culloden. However, as viewers will remember, we were left with hope. We not only saw that Claire had given birth to her’s and Jamie’s second child, but we actually were able to see Claire and Brianna living their lives in the 1960s.

But there may be some complications once Claire discovers that Jamie remarried. Will she be heartbroken? Will she be angry? Probably both. And how will Jamie feel once the love of his life comes back in to it (literally)?

Variety reported in January of this year that Sophie Skelton had been cast in the role of the couple’s second daughter, and the actress definitely lives up to the name of Fraser with playful smirk and long auburn locks.

“Strong-minded and intelligent beyond her years (traits inherited from both her mother and father), Brianna has a distinctly scholastic mindset and a healthy dose of Fraser stubbornness.”

We will meet some new (and relevant) characters.

We also know that 20 years means many changes for Jamie, who (with Claire’s help) killed Dougal. Now, Jamie is in his forties and his small nephew Ian has grown into a young man–a character that they have yet to cast, according to Parent Herald. The role of Lord John Grey (a friend of Jamie’s and a closeted gay man) will be played by David Berry, IBTimes reported.

One complaint many fans had against the last season of Outlander was that many scenes, scenarios, and characters were just downright unnecessary (for instance the long, drawn-out occurrence involving the king struggling with constipation in front of a crowd of observers). The characters that we are seeing cast in the third season should be more relevant and (hopefully) not so odd.

The series’ premiere date has yet to be announced, but it should be sometime in the spring of 2017. Until then, enjoy this recap of the second season and keep watching for updates!
