India: 11-Month-Old Baby Raped Inside Police Complex By Construction Worker

In yet another shocking case of rape from New Delhi, the capital city of India, an 11-month-old baby was reportedly abducted and raped by a construction worker. According to The Times of India, the incident happened in the Vikaspuri area of the city on Friday. Ironically, the incident is reported to have happened inside an office-residential complex that houses police officers from the city’s large police force. While the police officers were not able to prevent the crime from happening right under their noses, they were able to arrest the rapist, who they say is a 36-year-old migrant laborer who lived near the family of the baby.

Following his arrest, the man, whose identity remains under wraps, told police officers that he abducted the baby on the night of the incident after finding the infant sleeping next to her mother inside a makeshift shelter by the road within the police complex. He confessed that at around 10 p.m. local time, he took the baby away from the mother into a nearby wooded area. Shortly after the baby was abducted, at around 11 p.m. local time, the woman woke up and raised an alarm. Police were called in who officially started investigating the case immediately.

Several hours of intensive search later, the baby was found not far from where she was abducted from, in an unconscious state. The baby was discovered by a group of officers from the Vikaspuri police station. The baby was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, where an examination confirmed that the baby was raped. Doctors from the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where the baby was taken to, confirmed a case of sexual assault while adding that the baby was placed in an intensive care unit at the hospital.

A senior officer investigating the incident confirmed the incident and said, “The girl was bleeding profusely. Doctors at the hospital have said that her condition is serious.”

He went on to add that they were able to nab the suspect after a mobile phone was found in the area where the baby was left alone.

“The police team was helped by the recovery of the mobile phone to track the location of the accused. We traced him to the labor camp,” the officer added.

After the suspect was caught, he did not confess to the crime immediately. However, on sustained questioning, he went on to admit that he had indeed raped the child for “over two hours.”

Meanwhile, officers investigating the incident revealed that the suspect was a native of the impoverished state of Bihar in northern India and that he was traveled to daily occasionally in search of work. The father of the baby has also identified the accused and said that both of them were employed by the same contractor who was hired to construct a boundary wall within the police complex.

Describing the entire incident, a police officer said, “The accused lived with the other laborers engaged in building the boundary wall. In his confession, he told us that he picked up the infant around 10pm. He said he then took her to the bushes beside a drain and raped her for nearly two hours. Fearing that she had died when she became unconscious, he left the child in the bushes and fled to his shack.”

In fact, he was among the group of people who came in to help the mother of the baby when she raised an alarm and started looking for her missing child.

A senior police officer from the Delhi Police Pushpendra Kumar confirmed that the accused has been charged for rape under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. He was subsequently sent to a local jail, where he will remain until the trial starts.

In a statement given to the police by the father of the baby, he said, “I was horrified to see my daughter’s condition. Her clothes were torn and she had nail marks all over the body. The severe injuries might have a lifelong impact on her health.”
