Cristina Yang’s Return To ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Confirmed? Shonda Rhimes Weighs In

Is Cristina Yang returning to Grey’s Anatomy?

Fans have long speculated when Sandra Oh would reprise her role in the medical drama. Now, it looks like Season 13 might see the return of the fan favorite character.

According to Unreality TV, Oh’s comeback was first hinted when Kelly McCreary revealed that Season 13 will focus on the show’s original characters.

“We’re gonna be spending some more time with them to check in with where they are,” McCreary, who plays Maggie, shared. “I think we can expect to see those doctors being explored where they are in this moment, all these years later, the changes that they’ve gone through.”

With Grey’s Anatomy focusing on “old, established relationships,” many fans thought that a few old characters might make cameos in the new season, including Cristina Yang.

Recent developments fueled the rumors even further.

Morning Ledger is reporting that Debby Allen just posted a picture of the name of Season 13 first episode on Instagram. The episode is titled “Undo,” which made fans think about Owen and Amelia’s new marriage.

One of the problems with Oh’s return is how she might negatively affect Owen’s marriage with Amelia. In particular, many fans are worried that Christina would tear them apart if she returned to Grey Sloan Memorial at this time.

Some fans thought the title of episode one hinted of a falling out between Owen and Amelia, which might point toward Cristina’s involvement.

Unfortunately, series creator Shonda Rhimes has been largely silent about the possibility of Oh’s return to the hit show.

To add more fuel to the rumors, Cinema Blend reports that Caterina Scorsone recently revealed that Season 13 will feature an “explosive” moment. Is Scorsone referring to Oh’s cameo?

“Immediately on the tail of Amelia and Owen’s wedding, there’s a big explosive drama that’s happening right away. On Grey’s Anatomy it could be a literal explosion, but in this case, it’s emotionally explosive. It’s going to be a key story this year that a lot of people are going to be interested in,” she shared.

Of course, there is a possibility that Scorsone is referencing something besides Oh’s return.

In fact, there are plenty of storylines this season that could result in some high drama.

For starters, Cosmopolitan reports that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is still finding her way following the death of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). Although she isn’t completely over his tragic passing, Meredith sparked a romance with Riggs at the end of Season 12.

However, Meredith’s new romance isn’t without a good share of complications.

Not only does Riggs have a troubled past with Owen – who is like an older brother to Meredith – but Meredith’s sister, Maggie, also has feelings for him.

Unfortunately for Meredith, Maggie still doesn’t know about her growing romance with Riggs and isn’t likely to take the news very well.

At the same time, Jo and Alex continue to work through their set of problems. After Jo rejected Alex’s proposal, fans learned that she is still married to an abusive husband.

Instead of telling Alex about her ex-husband, Jo spent most of the Season 12 finale drinking and meeting up with De Luca, which led to an epic fight between him and Alex.

Both of these situations could be characterized as “explosive” when Grey’s Anatomy returns, though Oh’s involvement in the series would definitely trump any other development next season.

Thankfully, fans have less than a month to discover whether or not Oh will make a cameo in the new season of Grey’s Anatomy.

Season 13 of Grey’s Anatomy is set to premiere September 22 on ABC.
