‘Titanfall 2’ Introduces All Titans, Including One That Can Fly

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC owners had access to only two of the Titans during the Titanfall 2 Open Multiplayer Tech Test. Developer Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts revealed the rest of them Wednesday via the official website and a new trailer, including one that can snipe from the sky.

Titanfall 2 features six different Titans in all, each with their own specialized set of weapons and abilities. The Ion and Scorch were playable during the two weekend open beta. Both had similar movement speeds and armor, though very different weapons and abilities. Respawn appears to have been saving the more varied Titans – Legion, Ronin, Northstar, and Tone — for the full release.

Legion

Legion is the definite heavy in the cadre of Titans. The mech wields a giant minigun called the Predator Cannon and is built for frontline fighting.

These are the abilities available to the Legion:

  • Ordnance: Power Shot – Knock back enemies at close range, damages all enemies in its path at long range.
  • Tactical: Mode Switch – Switch between close and log range precision rounds.
  • Defensive: Gun Shield – Deploy a protective shield from the Predator Cannon
  • Core: Smart Core – The Predator Cannon automatically locks onto any enemy within range.

Ronin

The sword-wielding Ronin is the hit-and-run mech in the Titanfall 2 menagerie. As expected, its armor and health is relatively low compared to the other Titans, but its speed and damage make for a lethal combination. It comes equipped with a Leadwall Shotgun whose rounds bounce off walls in addition to the sword.

These are the abilities available to the Ronin:

  • Ordnance: Arc Wave – Create an electric wave that damages and slows enemies by swiping the Ronin’s swords across the ground.
  • Tactical: Phase Dash – Temporarily phases the Ronin out of the world to avoid incoming fire and to surprise enemies.
  • Defensive: Sword Block – Reduces damage taken from incoming fire and can be held up indefinitely.
  • Core: Sword Core – Empowers the Ronin’s melee and sword abilities and grants access to new sword attacks.

Northstar

The Titanfall 2 sniper mech, Northstar can take flight and hover on the battlefield to surprise enemies. It also comes with traps and cluster missiles. The Northstar uses a Plasma Railgun as its primary weapon, which charges up to fire while zoomed.

These are the abilities available to the Northstar:

  • Ordnance: Cluster Missile – Creates a sustained explosion on impact by releasing multiple bomblets.
  • Tactical: VTOL Hover – Allows the Northstar to take off and hover over all enemies.
  • Defensive: Tether Trap – Mines that lock down enemy Titans.
  • Core: Flight Core – Hover in the air and unleash a flurry of rockets at targets below.

Tone

The name of the Tone Titan refers to the sound of its missiles locking onto an enemy. It comes equipped with a 40mm Tracker Cannon that shoots semi-auto explosive rounds with a partial lock-on. It also has the ability to fire a full salvo of tracking missiles and reveal all enemies in an area.

These are the abilities available to the Tone:

  • Ordnance: Tracker Rockets – Fire missiles at enemies with a full lock-on.
  • Tactical: Sonar Lock – Reveal enemies in an area and gain a partial lock-on.
  • Defensive: Particle Wall – Places a defensive barrier in front of Tone that can be shot through.
  • Core: Salvo Core – Launches a barrage of rockets that can be guided in flight. Will automatically target any locked target Tone looks at.

Scorch

A heavier and slower Titan that uses fire-based weaponry for both offense and defense. It is equipped with the T-203 Thermite launcher that launches thermite projectiles to light up anything within range.

These are the Scorch’s available abilities.

  • Ordnance: Firewall – Fires a directed wall of thermite in the enemies direction.
  • Tactical: Incendiary Trap Deploys flammable gas canisters which can be triggered by the slightest spark.
  • Defensive: Thermal Shield Liquefies incoming artillery while dealing damage to nearby enemies.
  • Core: Flame Core – Creates a giant wave of fire that destroys anything in its path.

Ion

This is a slightly more mobile Titan than the Scorch, with the key difference being it uses energy-based weapons that players will need to manage. It is armed with a Splitter Rifle that can fire single shots rapidly or three powerful shots at once if enough energy is available.

Here are the Ion’s available abilities.

  • Ordnance: Laser Shot Shoulder-mounted laser beam.
  • Tactical: Tripwire Laser triggered explosive mines.
  • Defensive: Vortex Shield Absorb incoming fire and redirect it back at the enemy. A returning ability from the original Titanfall.
  • Core: Laser Core A deadly laser beam fired from the chest of the Ion. Think Iron Man.

Titanfall 2 is due out October 28 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
