iPhone 7 Rumors: With Announcement Of Next Week’s Launch, Rumors Claim New iPhone Will Have Twice As Much Storage, Wireless ‘AirPods’ Earbuds

The iPhone 7 launch date has been announced, and now rumors are flying about the latest iteration of the popular Apple cell phone including the largest storage capacity as well as new wireless earbud headphones.

Apple just tipped the launch of the iPhone 7 by sending out media invitations for an event taking place next week. The launch is set for Wednesday, September 7, in San Francisco. While Apple hasn’t said exactly what will take place at the launch, the fact that the technology giant chose the 7th for the announcement had led most to believe that it will be the long-awaited launch of the iPhone 7.

The rumors about the iPhone 7 started almost immediately, with the U.K.’s Mirror even trying to decipher the announcement Apple sent, which was a simple placard showing some colorful dots.

“It also features a number of translucent colored dots outlining the top portion of Apple’s logo, which may relate to the rumor that Apple is planning to introduce new colored handsets.

“In photography, this out-of-focus effect is called bokeh. It is usually hard to create with a phone camera, suggesting that the iPhone 7 could feature an upgraded camera lens.”

The drops could also suggest that the iPhone 7 will be waterproof, the report suggested.

But there are some much more specific rumors about the iPhone 7 floating around, as well. Some leaked reports appeared early this week (including one from BGR) claiming that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will feature upgraded cameras, bigger batteries, a new 16nm Apple A10 processor, and either 2GB or 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM. That would give the iPhone 7 double the storage capacity of the previous iterations.

There are also rumors that the iPhone 7 could introduce wireless “AirPods” ear buds. Though there is still no confirmation of exactly what the AirPods might be, The Next Web found a device registration in Europe for the devices and assumed that it would be describing wireless listening devices.

Though Apple’s iPhone has often set the standard for smartphone features, it has fallen behind its rivals regarding high-resolution screen displays, BGR noted. The report recalled a claim Steve Jobs made in 2010 that Apple’s new Retina Display would set the standard for the next five years, but Apple has failed to follow up on a new standard.

“Jobs was close. For about four years, iPhone displays were easily among the best in the business. What Apple didn’t anticipate, however, was how fast rival smartphone companies would match and surpass Apple’s screen tech,” the report noted.

There were no significant upgrades to displays in the last two iPhones even as rivals like Samsung surpassed their technology. And the iPhone 7 rumors suggest that Apple doesn’t have anything major planned — at least not yet. The report noted that Apple would be introducing a curved OLED panel for next year’s iPhone, which will be the 10th anniversary of the phone.

There are other outlets reporting on the iPhone 7 rumors, including a report from MacRumors about potential colors. The website pulled a report from the Japanese Mac Otakara which found that the iPhone 7 will have a darker color option to replace Space Gray, with a new glossy black exterior.

“The website now believes the new glossy black option will be part of a five-color lineup, including Gold, Rose Gold, Silver, and Space Gray. It previously said the new color will be a ‘much darker’ variant of Space Gray that is “close to black, though not quite black,” and mockups of what an iPhone 7 in that color could look like, including the one above, quickly surfaced around the web.”
